Hasbro Confirms New Unannounced Dungeons & Dragons Video Game in Development

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has confirmed that an in-house studio is developing an unannounced Dungeons & Dragons video game. In a feature posted today on Bloomberg News, Cocks stated that Hasbro was actively developing a Dungeons & Dragons video game via one of its in-house studios. No further details were provided about the video game, nor was any timeline given about its release. Hasbro plans to release one to two video games a year by 2026, not including third party licensed games.

Hasbro is actively pivoting into a video game developer, having purchased or created several in-house studios in recent years. One of the most high-profile ventures is Exodus, a sci-fi RPG created by several BioWare veterans. A GI Joe video game focused on Snake-Eyes is also in development at a Hasbro-owned studio.

Hasbro is also actively working with several third party studios on new D&D video games. Gameloft, the maker of Disney Dreamlight Valley, is making a survival-life sim set in the Forgotten Realms, while Starbreeze Entertainment is also actively working on a D&D video game. Hasbro also cancelled several video game projects, including several Dungeons & Dragons-themed games back in 2023 as part of a strategic realignment.

Also, the different environment can set it apart from BG3. And will allow for a Drizzt cameo!
Hasbro being scared of R-rated content will also differentiate it.

I don't think it's possible to overstate just how horny CRPG fans often are. Removing that content from the game, which I'd expect, is going to deter a lot of RPG fans who aren't deeply invested in D&D lore.

Having Drizzt is a lot less important than if you can make him get naked, commercially.

I don't advice online videogame, it is too risky, even for the biggest companies.

I could say something to joke, for example Witchlight, the cozy life simulation. Or a otome interactive novel set in Stryxhaven.

Now seriously, an door should be opened for a survival game of Dark Sun, something like Conan exiles but with psionic powers.

A new D&D arcade by Capcom? Maybe a reimagination of Mystara with some changes in the geography, and mash-up version of Capcom's characters. With an optional offline virtual tabletop mode.

Birthright should be the best option for a strategy game style Total War: Warhammer.

Falkovnia from Ravenloft is perfect for a zombie apocalypse survival game. Maybe the antagonist would be the demilord Falconetti. (a different character with the same surname, not the one from the TV serie "Rich man, poor man"), or a different surname linked to falcons. Please, no stupid jokes about Falkovnia and the soap opera from 80s "Falcon Crest" (my mother watched the first seasons when I was a little child).

Other option could be a D&D mash-up version of famous franchises, for example Marvel and DC.

I would like a more tactical game or dungeon crawler. I would also hypothetically like a Baldur's Gate 4, but I don't know if anyone could make a good BG4 given how wildly atypical it's development apparently was (to the point that other studios have basically said "BG3 is insane, please don't hold us or anyone else to that standard").

I guess they could try an actual Planescape: Torment sequel, we've already got a "spiritual sequel" in the form of Torment: Tides of Numenera, but maybe it's time for an actual sequel (though not about the Nameless One).

I assume that many of those new games are going to be in the Unreal Engine given that it's an industry standard, and they're dealing with studios that probably aren't going to try to re-invent the wheel for game engines.

We already know Exodus is Unreal 5, and while we don't knownif this EnWorld story is the same as this Unreal D&D game WotC's Montreal studio Invoke has been working on, but it probably is:

"No release date or further details about what the game will be were announced, but Wizards of the Coast did reveal that Invoke is planning to up its development team from its current 80 members to more than 200 by 2025, though it's unclear if this full, 200+ team will be necessary to complete development on the new game."

This is heresy, but I don't think Sigil is necessarily the best choice for a broad appeal computer game, which is what I assume Hasbro is hoping for.

Something a bit easier to immediately grasp seems more likely. So Forgotten Realms or maybe Ravenloft.
