Greater Mage Hand

With Greater Mage Hand from Magic of Faerun, you can move an object or creature up to 10 pounds per level. It says for objects on a creature (or the creature itself), they get a will save with spell resistance.

Can I use this spell to take a weapon from a creature's hands? What about an item that's tied to a creature's belt or back?

I'm taking a guess since I don't have the spell in front of me, but I'd say Yes, but they get a will save and SR, since a weapon is an 'object on the person.' If its tied to their pack or belt, you best untie it :)

I guess my question is - is there a difference between something tied to a belt and something held in someone's hands? You could say that something held in someone's hands are "tied" as well.

Yes, you could, but it'd be more complex than just a single Will save.

The Will save is there to see if you can affect someone (or one of their possessions) against their wishes at all. If they fail the Will save, then you've managed to take a hold of it - but if it's a weapon they're wielding, it should take at least one more check to see if you can wrestle it away from them. Something like opposed STR checks, with your bonus determined by the level of the spell, or maybe based off of how much the Greater Mage Hand can lift...

But if you can do that with GMH, why take Telekinesis at 5th level?

I don't see anything in Telekinesis that explains what happens when someone is grasping an object different than the item just being held on the creature.

In fact, the only differences I see with Telekinesis are:

o 25 lbs/level instead of 10 lbs/level
o Longer range
o Violent thrust
o Can throw object with an attack roll

The weight limit wouldn't matter since a weapon would easily be within the limits of both spells. The violent thrust, however, could be good enough to rip it out of someone's hand.

In fact, since part of a violent thrust can be used to attack someone, you could conceivably rip an axe out of an orc's hand and towards another orc, possibly hitting him.

Interesting idea...
