D&D (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

I originally gave flanking +1 to hit. You'd think it wouldn't be worthwhile but everyone can remember those times that you missed your to-hit by 1.
Then we moved to A5E where it grants an expertise die (same as attacking from high ground)- players always want to flank 😆

You become flanked if you end your turn with enemies on both sides of you (surrounded). You remain flanked until you are no longer surrounded.

While flanked, all attacks on you are at advantage.

Result:
  • The advantage isn't free.
  • Lots of incentive to move. Even to take OAs to avoid being flanked.
  • No flanking congo line of ABABAB where nobody has incentive to move, as mocing just suffers you an oa and the enemy can reflank free anyhow.
  • Punishment is a bit bigger for being flanked, which makes threatening it still tempting.

The old flanking rules lead to a few conga lines of death when I was trying them. If I ever start up another 5E campaign, I might try making it so that you can't flank someone if you yourself are flanked.

I might look to try that expanded crit range, or some sort of +1/flanker rule. That last one might get a bit dog pile-y, but we'll have to see.

I use the Overwhlem rules from Fantasy AGE:
- +1 damage per hit for each flanking creatures over a single one (+1 damage for 2 flanking PCs), +2 for 3 flankers etc).

The creatures only need to attack the same creature, no need to position themselves in the back ( since moving within 5 ft of a creature don't provoke anyways).

I house rule it so that flanking gives attackers a critical hit on a 19 or 20. It still rewards tactical movement but doesn't interfere with the advantage / disadvantage system.
maybe one of the reasons why advantage/disadvantage should stack.
max maybe 3 or 4 dice. +1 dice with elven accuracy.

that would also give incentive to barbarians to seek flank while using reckless attack and preventing flank on them.

1 die; 60% hit chance, 5% crit
2 dice; 84% hit chance, 9,75% crit
3 dice; 93,6% hit chance, 14,26% crit
4 dice; 97,44% hit chance, 18,55% crit
5 dice; 98,98% hit chance, 22,62% crit
