D&D General Favourite Outer Plane?

Favourite Outer Plane?


I'm not much for running things on other planes (unless we're talking Ravenloft, which ought to be an outer plane of pure (Neutral) Evil). But, to pick one, it'd probably be the Beastlands, as @R_J_K75 notes - "Red in tooth and claw". I'd like to make it the home of Lycanthropes, if it isn't already.

Hades: It's kinda forgettable.
I like to think of Hades as the Shadowfell of the Outer Planes. It's gloomy, soul-crushing, and creepy, with a bunch of miserable dead souls wandering about. (Edit: also, see Stormonu's comment about Ravenloft in the previous post. Great minds, and all that.)

Hades is also the Harkonnen planet from Dune: Part 2: it's bleached of all color and it's residents tend to be murderous, self-absorbed sociopaths.
 

I think Mount Celestia would be my favorite of the upper planes. There are a lot of details for the plane that I like; it’s the home of the Archons, each mountain is unique with its own challenges and wonders, and several well known gods reside there like Bahamut, Moradin, Yondalla, Tyr, Ilmater, and Jazirian.

I actually love most of them just about equally. But... there are a few that I really don't like. It's simply a matter that if you're in an Outer Plane, it has to feel unworldly. Basically a "we're not on the Material Plane any more, Toto!" situation when you get your bearings and look around. In most cases, this would be instantaneous, but even those that take a few moments for your mind to be blown ("There's land above us where the sky should be!", "The sun/moon isn't rising or setting!", "There's a huge mountain over there with a torus floating above it!") are still good. It's the ones like Arcadia and Elysium, which would be hard to differentiate from Material Plane worlds which are the ones I don't like much. Yes, Elysium has its secrets and trapping mechanism, but that's nowhere immediately apparent, and all Arcadia has is its Storm Kings, something that someone from a deity- and magic-filled Material world wouldn't consider terribly outlandish...
 

I want to give some love to Bytopia. You can set your entire adventure in this plane and it would still be familiar AND wonderous at the same time. You just look up and the entire sky is filled not with stars, but the campfires and glittering lights of the other side. You can climb a mountain and fall up onto its matching mountain. You can do a classic Points of Light style campaign easily, and it allows for the full range of encounters from CR 1 to CR20+.

It's practically a fully playable setting on its own!

Only good lycanthropes go to the Beastlands and they stay in animal form

I don't know if others have the same mindset, but that plane as written in my mind seems devoid of reasons to use for adventuring. Don't know if its a mental block of its actually been written in a way to discourage using it for adventure.

Well, it is Heaven. And the needs of adventurers aren't really my highest priority in worldbuilding anyway, especially cosmology-building.
