Fantasy Anime Movies?

Umm not if you like a particular character from the Series. i LOVED Folken (in fact still do) but the movie ... they ruined him.

I suppose, from that perspective. The movie is an entierly different creature from the series. Still, judged on it's own merits, I can't really find flaw with the movie. Stunning artwork, if nothing else.

oh im sure i would have liked the movie if they had called it something else. i loved the art work and such.

I mean, i started with the series. A friend was like "The main character uses tarot cards and you will absolutely fall in love with Folken Ryan."

So he went out and bought the first 2 DVDs. 8 episodes. After watching them i wanted to see more. He had to wait another 2 weeks till pay day. 2 weeks rolled around and we went to get the 3rd DVD (only 3 episodes this time) and, like an idiot, i watched them all at once and was left wanting more.

When i finally finished them, he sat me down to the movie and i was horrified. It wasn't the Escaflowne i had come to love over the course of 1/2 a year. And the character from the show i loved the most ... was taken from me.

Kinda like Final Fantasy IX. Vivi. Everyone loves little black mage Vivi. What if you played another game and the character looked like Vivi, had the same name but was ... vastly different, wouldnt you have a hard time picturing it being the same person?

Oh! The Final Fantasy series Vol I and Vol II were good too

Ninja Scroll. It might not have any magic, but the setting and fighting is awesome, and I couldn't believe no one mentioned it.

Yeah, I second that one too. . .very nice piece of work.

In addition, Record of Lodoss was TERRIBLE. Soo annoying, cheesy, and not that great art in my opinion.

Moved to the "Fantasy & Sci-Fi Books, Movies & TV" forum.

And I second a lot of the suggestions posted here (e.g., Escaflowne, Ninja Scroll, Lodoss War) - including some that aren't fantasy IMO (e.g., Cowboy Bebop). :)

There are ton's of good anime set in Fuedal Japan, Ninja Scroll being the best (one of the best anime ever brought to America). Raven Tengu Kabuto and Sword of Truth are also pretty good. I never saw the second Ninja Scroll movie but was told it wasn't very good.

Lodoss War is so D&D that it suprises me that it didn't come with a D&D logo on the front. It is good but there is much better out there. Never saw the second series.

The Historic Legend of Arislan is real good if you don't mind that they never released all of it here. It just stops.

The Dagger of Ka Mui is a old anime that ends up with ninja's in the old west (I think Mark Twain was actually in it, it's been a very long time).

There is a Romance of the Three Kingdoms movie out there (called Great Conquest)

Legend of Lemnear is not that good and there are dozens of simular anime out there like it.

Legend of Lyon Flare is pretty much anime porn. (it may go under a different name here now, it was from the late 80's)

Princess Monoke was very good storywise but was very deep, you had to pay attention and It wasn't as action oriented as some of the others.

Dragon Knight and Dragon Pink are two I can't actually remember much about, I think both were ok although I seem to remember both being very adult oriented (Dragon Pink was comedy, I'm pretty sure of that)

Vampire Hunter D is one of the first anime I ever saw (along with Fist of the Northstar) It is extremely good but shows it's age. I have not seen the new Vampire Hunter D movie.

Bastard is about a Sorcerer, it isn't that good and is very adult but it was fun. Used Magic a lot like in D&D (only had a certain amount of spells, etc...)

Berserk looks to be very good, I just started it (two dvd's in) and I am very impressed.

That's all from my personal collection, (man I own a lot of crap). I have heard that the Slayers is pretty good too but I have never seen it. Inuyasha on Cartoon Network is very good. I'm just getting back into Anime (mostly thanks to the Anime thread here)

I haven't seen Violinist of Hameln suggested yet, so.......*suggest* :p

Unfortunately, I cannot really rate it, as I have only been able to watch one episode; it's somewhat difficult to find (for me, at least). However, if you like Bards, the series could prove entertaining. I like what I have seen in the first ep, and hope to locate the rest soon.

Lodoss is dumb, dumb, dumb. Oh, the artwork and music are great, but Parn (the main hero, a fighter/paladin lookalike) makes Luke Skywalker look like Errol Flynn. Not that that stops Deedlit, the archetypal elf babe, from mooning all over him.

Hehe... ever notice that the Lodoss party consists of a fighter, a thief, a magic-user, a priest, an elf, and a dwarf? Sound familiar? ;) IIRC, it's based directly off the writer's OD&D campaign. In response to a later post... only reason it doesn't have the D&D logo is licensing issues, I'm sure. ;)

even better than the first, IMO. the animation quality is superb, story's not too bad, either

I have to agree with Lodoss War, Vampire Hunter D (and its sequel VHD: Bloodlust), and Ninja Scroll.

I'll add Innuyasha. Also, the original Dragon Ball is pretty good comedy fantasy sci-fi (Dragon Ball Z is good if you like non-stop battles..personally, while I always liked it, I didn't really love it until it focused on Gohan in his teenage years).

The Tenchi Muyo series is one of my all time favorites (just got myself a box set of the original 13 episodes). Mostly sci-fi, but with a bit of Star Wars fantasy mixed in.

Oh, and Giant Robo. Not fantasy, but excellent none the less.
