Exactly how dumb is a 7 Int?

Exactly how dumb is a 7 int? I normally like to think that your int score times ten equals your IQ, but, statistically that doesn't make alot of sense. How intelligent would a 7 int character be? What kind of handicaps would he have? I've rolled up a character with this (he has 17 wis, 13 cha) and I'm not exactly sure how to RP that kind of intelligence. Any advice on this issue?

I'd say it depends on what you like to play.
Forrest Gump? Or maybe the guy from Aliens 3 with lower than average IQ? The stereotypical barbarian? IMHO, Int 7 can be all of the above.

I'd play him as a follower. He's got a great wisdom score and an above average charisma score. To me, this means he's got a strong will, a good set of "gut instincts" and is generally pleasant to be around. However, he might have a more childlike reaction to things like a rogue disarming traps, a wizard memorizing and learning spells, etc. Things that require great mental focus and things with a more technical background would baffle him, but he'd be very curious and interested in how other people manage to do those things; he'd also get flustered and confused very easily, which could be overcome by the patience and tutelage of someone much more intelligent than he is. He's definitely below-average intelligence though, so the chances of him really learning those things are nil. He'd rely more on his smarter friends and his own gut to make tough decisions.

I've got a rogue with a wisdom of 6, and he's been a blast to play. He's a halfling, so he likes trouble as it is. And he's got a killer pick pockets bonus. Let's just say he's terribly weak-willed and tends to act before he thinks of the consequences.

Hope this helped you a little bit, though I'm sure someone around here with more experience than myself will give you much better advice. :)

Int as a stat isn't only a representation of Inteligence. It's also a measure for learning skills and memory capacity.

So instead of playing him as a dumb person, you could make him forgetfull, although most people find this more appropriate for low wis...

Or just someone with a lousy education. He's not stupid, he just doesn't know (fill in approriate knowledge skill) anything else but to fight/kill/whatever.
Just my 2 cents. ;)

With your wisdom score being so high, I would say your PC has tons of common sense, but has a hard time with rote memorization. I would probably play him like he has attention deficit disorder. The pc might have a hard time focusing on the task at hand and gets bored easily. He might seem lazy or unfocused to others, but he would be johnny on the spot with common sense stuff that genius level PCs might have a hard time with. He would probably tend to be very non analytical, but not impulsive. He will be a most interesting character to play. I hope you really enjoy him.

well, an orc has a 9 int, and ogre has a 6 and a dog has a 2.

so, your p.c. would be loosing chessgames to orcs. orcs mind you.

a manticore has a 7 int. you will be dumber than a blink dog by 3 :)

just a little smarter than your average ettin or gargoyle.

i reccomend reading "of mice and men" :p

This is how I play my half-orc cleric. He has a high wisdom but low int, so he isn't a real wit. He doesn't come up with plans, he doesn't talk to the townsfolk, but he does try to do his best by Pelor ... with a warhammer.

I frequently tell the DM that I "go off to pray". This is partly to play up his religious nature, but also I do it so I can avoid situations where I might be tempted to play the character smarter than he would really be.
