[Epic] Paladins and Improved Spell Capacity

First Post
According to the ELH, Improved Spell Capacity is one of the bonus feats which a Paladin can choose. But since there aren’t any 5th level Paladin spells, I’m wondering how a Paladin would benefit from taking this feat…

Is he limited to taking the next 5th level spell listed under his domain? That seems too limiting -- for the cost of an “Epic” feat.

And on a similar note...

Would an Epic Paladin start using Spell Seeds like his wizardly counterparts?

Or for that matter… could an Epic Paladin start using Spell Seeds like his wizardly counterparts?

Paladins don't get domains.

A paladin with a 5th level slot can fill it with a lower level spell, or a metamagiced version of a lower level spell.

(It's not really a good feat for paladins.)

An Epic Paladin would need to take Improved Spellcasting Capacity five times, so that he could meet the 'able to cast 9th level spells' requirement for Epic Spellcasting. At that point he could take the Epic Spellcasting feat and create epic spells.

In other words, even using Epic feats, there’s no way for a Paladin to cast a 6th level spell like Heal?

So he’ll have to burn six Epic feats just to duplicate a Heal effect?

Oy!

Oy, I say!

Umm. Guess not. :D

Something similar came up about the assassin, concerning the Soulreaver prestige class in Dragon Magazine #297, but that class has a feature that extends the existing spell list. I suppose you could easily make a similar prestige class for the paladin class...

Instead of burning 6 feats to be able to cast a heal effect, how about picking up 11 levels of cleric instead. If you want to be a major divine spellcaster, be a cleric, not a paladin.

Right. The reason's easy: Heal isn't on the Paladin class list. Note that a Wizard with improved spell capacity can't cast 10th-level spells, either, cause there are no 10th-level spells. All he can do is use metamagic on spells to get the effective level above the normal maximum. Just like the Paladin.
