Dwarven Women: Beards or no Beards?

Aye, probably a good point about the hormones. I just like to think of Dwarves, Elves, Halflings, Gnomes, Orcs, etc. to be offshoots of Homo Sapiens, so they'd be quite similar to humans.

Y'know, Homo Ferrus for Dwarves, Homo Brachius for elves, Homo Dimunitivus for Halflings, Homo Decepticus for Gnomes, Homo Brutalis for Orcs....(to use bad pidgin doggy-style latin)....IMC, in fact, humans are the original race, and all other species have stemmed from them evolutionarily.

It doesn't have to be anything like that, however.

And the Dwarves = Male, Elves = Female issue is a very very good one...now we just need a race to exemplify the bad aspects of each gender, if dwarves and elves exemplify the good ones.

Maybe Orcs for Bad Men and....er....Drow for Bad Girls?

Maybe not. Anywho, I'm glad that the theory of dwarven/elven gender dichotomy is being explored....mwahaha. :)

I certainly don't like this theory. Given one of the sources of the bearded female dwarves is Tolkien, I'll use this for elves as well.

I certainly dont see much in the way of feminine qualities in Tolkiens Elves...especially guys like Fingolfin, Feanor and all his sons.

And as to the question waaaaaaaaaay up further that attempted to derail the thread... Can elves have beards?

That is a NO.

Not according to Tolkien. In the last chapter of Lord of the Rings Círdan is explicitly described as having a beard. And Tolkien's drawings of Gwindor and Beleg show both of them as bearded.

Where? from all I had read Cirdan was the only bearded Elf ever.

It kinda amuses me how people frequently reference Tolkien as if he had the last word on the subject. :)

Surely, you can do whatever you want -- it's all up to personal tastes, really. There's no "right."
