Dungeon magazine says maybe more vile. Huzzah!

At the same time, BoVD and the mature content from Dragon and Dungeon presented the first material from WotC that didn't treat me like a 15 year old with an over-bearing parent lurking over my shoulder. I would certainly invite more of that. If anything, Paizo's error is in including this in Dungeon/Dragon issues; If the demand is that high, they might consider a 3rd publication expressly for it. That I might buy on a regular basis.

Absolutely spot on. I would love to see a mature publication like White Wolf's "Black Dog" for D&D, I know it would get my support and hard earned cash.

I think I'll just chime in here. I always read the editorials in Dragon and Dungeon magazine. I have to say that I was extremely happy when I read that they probably will include more vile in upcoming issues. It reaffirmed that roleplayers are a mature bunch that can handle some dark and gritty subject matter in our fantasy. If everything they release is popcorn and fluff, the hobby quickly becomes boring and less vital, as is evidenced by AD&D 2nd edition, which pandered to every outraged parent and right winger that made such ridiculous, unfounded, and uninformed noise back in the '80's. I like having vile content, if only to spite the self appointed defenders of "common decency" who have so vigorously attacked the hobby (and continue to do so) for as long as it has existed. Maybe this attitude is a little immature, its really no different that getting around some jerk on the freeway who's been purposely preventing you from moving around them in order to "enforce" the speed limit, then flipping them the bird as you speed on by.

Most of us were introduced to this hobby in our pre-teen years ( ran a poll on this a while back). By pushing up the "Rating" of the game, we're pulling up the ladder behind us... if D&D had been "Mature Gaming" when YOU found it, would YOU have gotten into it?
But D&D isn't a monolithic entity. If the core books aren't vile, and if any future basic set isn't vile, where's the problem? We don't need to lower all material to a child's level; we just need to keep some material child-appropriate.

I've been gaming close to 30 years and personally I think the "Vile" stuff in VERY BORING and UNCREATIVE. It's like too much swearing in a movie, they can't come up with better more creative material so just throw some sex and gross stuff into D&D. Just my two cents worth. I guess I don't mind if they put more in from time to time for those of you that like it, just don't saturate us with it, like the drow crap.

I don't care one way or the other, as long as they don't seal any parts of the mag with uncut pages. That was annoying.

You said it, Agamon.

Also if they do continue to publish "vile" material I hope that they do it without the vile tag and cheesy marketing. I'm not opposed to some gritty subject matter but I think it's lame when it's the whole focus.

While I don't necessarily think the drow material is all crap, I do agree that too much of anything is rarely a good thing.

Call me, He Who is Flamebait

Labels. I consider myself pretty conservative. Being in my mid 30's and all but really...

There are a lot more pro-vile than you would think. The silent majority, that ones that really don't mind, who are grown up enough to handle it are the ones who never really speak out. Mostly because they recognize that its adult content and are fine with it. And its not that big of a frigging deal to get all bent out of shape about. I would encourage anyone who may not think its worth their time to write Dragon and let them know that its "cool" with them. I am quite certain the deluge would drown out the cacaphony of bleating, hang wringers who sadly, are the loudest regarding issues such as this.

I'm also glad to see they are considering more mature subject matter. But at the same time I felt some of the stuff was flirting with crossing the line of "vile for vile's sake" rather than truly adding to the game. Probably because they set out to create a "vile issue" and "vile adventure".

As long as that isn't the case, and it comes up in contexts in which it adds to the product, I'm all for it. It's always better to have a choice, just like in books, comics, and computer games.

I think that we can easily have both games.

D&D isn't a monolithic entity. In fact, it's as modular as conceivably possible (for such a complex thing). Publishing vile material doesn't do anything to The Sigil's game or anyone else's unless they actively go and use it. This is even better than Microsoft's OSes where if you don't want something you have to go and pull it out and swear a lot while doing it, but I digress...

The only rational argument I can see is that publishing vile material might get certain extremist groups to label the game as "evil", etc. Not that they don't do so anyway, though.

So let Dragon or WotC or whoever publish some vile every now and then. Don't like it, don't use it, it's really that simple.

Do I hear that. "Look, man, how vile this guy is! He ate the hearts of a thousand of virgins, had sex with a succubus, and has a rod made of human tongues!"

Who is the better villain, Jason or Darth Vader? Following the so-called "vile" line, it'd be Jason, and I guess we're all in agreement this simply isn't the case (despite George Lucas' "efforts").

The evilest person in history, Adolph Hitler, never ate the heart of a virgin, never had sex with a succubus, and did not have a coat made of human skin. He might never have even killed a person.
