Hoh-lee crap. This again? This book says this and that books says that, the race was created this way or they were created that, they're reptiles, they're not reptiles, dragons are reptiles, dragons aren't reptiles...and through it all the dragon-boobs.

Just make the damn things what-/how-/whichever way you want!

I agree with you, but apparently some people read and enjoy the fluff in the books, I honestly could care less I don't read 75% of it, give me mechanics and rules and stop wasting space with some other guys version of what the races, classes, and monsters look like, do, come from, motivations, etc..

I read and enjoy the fluff in books...oftentimes more than the crunchy bits. But I am more than capable of knowing what/how I want things in my games and saying so. This kind of thing [the question of the thread] has no answer. It's an utter waste of time and energy. You can follow the fluff they give you...or not. Add to it as you like...or not. Change the entire premise of the species...or not...All that matters is it suits your needs for the fun of the game that is happening. Do something different with them the next time you play if you want! [EDIT: the point being, Dragonborn have been a pain in the ass since their creation and folks who want to use them ought to know, by now, what/how they like to think about them and use them/EDIT]

Do you want to run an adventure in which the party finds/is taking care of/must protect a dragonborn infant? Then make a dragonborn infant? Someone employing the party to locate a gold dragonborn egg? Then put eggs in the world somewhere...and make it gold. Maybe only brass, copper and bronze dragons make dragonborn from eggs. Maybe only blue and pink polka-dot dragons bare live spawn. Maybe gold dragons breathe dragonborn into existence. Maybe the "crystal" Orbs of Dragonkind are actually dragon eggs and adult dragons are drawn [in mindless panic] to it to save/protect the ONLY known dragonborn eggs left in the world (which each produce 10 offspring when they hatch).

The "is this '0' or '1'/black or white" binary thinking needs to be excised from the game entirely.

I've decided. They're marsupials.

PHB, pg 34:

Age. Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.
