Does Water Breathing allow spell casting?

Dwarmaj

First Post
If you have the spell Water Breathing active, can you cast spells under water? You can breathe, but can you talk? How do spell components hold up?

I'm curious if Silent Spell and Eschew Materials would be needed for spell casting under water.

It would make your post void.

I would think there is a post somewhere about this as I am curious myself. I would think that yes you could as sound can be heard underwater just as humans (taking a liberty here) are not equipped to understand it perfectly.

The component i would say may be a problem.

No, it wouldn't. He was asking if Water Breathing allowed you to use Verbal components for a spell while underwater and whether or not you could use material components underwater. If not, he was deducing that you would then need the Silent Spell feat and Eschew Materials feat in order to cast underwater, if Water Breathing wouldn't allow it. ;)

Personally, I don't think Water Breathing allows you to speak under water. Land based creatures simply lack the capability of speach under water. The spell let's you breathe the water, but I believe that's all it does. I could be wrong though.

Anybody else know?

Sound can carry underwater but we don't have the olfactory capabilty to understand(water in the ears problem). I still think you can speak just have a hard time making sure you say what you want to say.

The components are the problem i see.

I think this is what i meant to refer to that yes those feats are great in that situation..sorry forgot to put that in the post.

Dragon Magazine had the only section I know so far on underwater combat. It was in the gnome magazine I think.

In any case, the only rules it puts forth for spells is something like "all spells work normally except fire spells", "fire spells require a spellcraft check (DC 15) to suceed and if they do produce areas of steam instead".

I didn't like this, because I think if armor is inhibiting to spell casting, then having water in your mouth and wearing robes and such would be just as bad.

To people who had freedom of movement and water breathing I gave no penalty, to people who had just water breathing I made them do spellcraft checks DC 10+spell level to get the spell off.

But there are no rules for it officially yet that I am aware of.

Then why didn't you say it?

This...

...does not equal this...

Don't roll your eyes unless you have a good reason. It looks silly otherwise. ;)

I have that issue. I believe they were referring to the actual mechanics of a spell after it is cast, as opposed to the actual casting of the spell.

I would say no. There is a magic item in a book (really don't know which book, but it's a cloak of some kind), which let you cast underwater. It had the spell Waterbreathing and Freedom of Movement. If I had to make a ruling, I'd say you need both spells active (or the item) to cast underwater.

You can also find those rules for underwater combat in the web enhancement for RttToEE, as well as the Dungeon 92 adventure "The Razing of Redshore".

The only reason you hear your voice at all under water is because you are shoving air through your throatbox and out of your mouth as you speak. Without air, not just oxygen, you can't speak. You're physically incapable of it.
