D&D 5E Do the Paladin Oath Spells add to the spells he can cast or the spells he knows?

Ok perhaps a silly question:

A 3rd level paladin has 3 spell slots so can cast 3 spells.

His oath gives him 2 additional spells.

Are these spells known that must be cast within his limit of 3 slots or does he get 3 slots + 2 bonus slots that must be his oath spells?

I think it's the former but am unsure.

Like Domain spells, these spells are always prepared, but you still have to spend spell slots to cast them.

This is correct. In the OP's terms, they are spells "known," not extra "casts" of spells. Or, another way to say it: Oath spells are not like 3.5e Cleric domain spells.

Unless otherwise stated, all "subclass-granted" spells are purely a matter of what you know and have prepared, and have no bearing on the total number of spells you can cast each day.
