I really wonder based on the "use the new rule if its published guidance" if I can pick and choose between the versions of a spell, i.e. the new sleep and the old sleep spell.
At the table sure, easy. Beyond? Probably...?
I've been assuming that this is what they will do, but I think it's a bit more complicated with a new PHB. For example, will it be all or nothing? Could I choose to toggle weapon masteries off but leave the new grappling rules on?D&D Beyond will label the older versions as Legacy content (which is what they do with older versions of creatures from VGtM, for example). If you have access to version now, you'll still have access to it later. However, a DM can choose to toggle off Legacy content if they wish (it's an option now for Legacy species) for any campaign of theirs you might join. If they don't, then it's a conversation between you and the DM on what can be used.
That's part of the concern indeed.I've been assuming that this is what they will do, but I think it's a bit more complicated with a new PHB. For example, will it be all or nothing? Could I choose to toggle weapon masteries off but leave the new grappling rules on?
I have only ordered a digital copy of the new PHB, and I am really interested to see how they handle it.
My hope is that they take this opportunity to allow full curation by DMs.That's part of the concern indeed.
I'm hoping to be able to curate the options shown to the players.
I would buy the new books to be able to do that.
Why would it be difficult? You can select which books your campaign is using. It handles legacy content.I really wonder based on the "use the new rule if its published guidance" if I can pick and choose between the versions of a spell, i.e. the new sleep and the old sleep spell.

I know about legacy content. Book by book would not be granular enough. Why would it be difficult? You can select which books your campaign is using. It handles legacy content.
If only a few items are of concern, it might be possible to create a custom version of it.I know about legacy content. Book by book would not be granular enough.
What if I want 2014 Sleep spell and not 2024?
I would rather they were not BOTH presented in the list of spells for players to choose.
You currently can't do it book by book and it's guided by the player choices during character creation. You can select which books your campaign is using. It handles legacy content.
