D&D 5E Disengage Action

You're in a 10' wide corridor and there's a creature between you and the door you need to go through. You have a higher initiative than the creature and it's your turn to act.

Can you take the Disengage action to move up to one of its threatening squares, 'Disengage' then move passed it without provoking any kind of physical attack?

Yes. But only if you do it like this:

Disengage is an action that involves no movement. When you take the Disengage action, it means your movement this turn does not provoke attacks of opportunity - but you don't move as *part* of the Disengage movement.

It is entirely legal to use the Disengage action and then move up to and around monsters without provoking attacks. Monks and rogues (in particular) tend to use this tactic a lot.

Cheers!

Yes, you can. The disengage action makes it so your movement does not provoke any opportunity attacks at all during your turn. Bear in mind that, unless you're a monk or a rogue, you're giving up your ability to attack on that turn. Seems like a fair trade-off to me.

Id like to add that in the situation of a surprise round you wouod not need to take disengage in the aforementioned situation. Enemy doesnt have his reaction until his turn in surprise has been resolved (missng a turn)

Using Disengage does not allow you to move through an enemy's space, however. So if they are blocking a door, you wouldn't be able to exit through it just by using Disengage.

In my experience it is best to remove disengage from the game. People can take the dodge action instead if they want to minimize OA damage. Otherwise it's too easy to position anywhere at the drop of a hat. Substitute the rogue and monk abilities for "OA limited Dodge" instead.

It's easy to think this.

However, I feel the advantages outweigh the cracks in verisimilitude: high mobility makes for a fun, exciting fluid game; while static combat tends to be dull.

Anything that encourages characters to move about is good, in the end analysis.
