It would depend on the kinds of adventures I planned on undertaking.

If I was preparing to explore a old tomb or ruin that might be riddled with ancient magical protections ready to zap the unwary then I would choose dispel magic.

If I had to face a band of ruthless bad guys and there were known spell casters among them then I would choose counterspell.

Being a wizard is all about knowledge. Know what it is you are planning to do and prepare accordingly.

What if you're a Warlock or a Bard and can only pick one? i.e: It's not in your list of Spells that you can Prepare and Switch every long rest?

Counterspell, it will save your life and that of your friends.

Dispel magic, is mostly about overcoming environmental challenges that if you don't have dispel magic your DM will work with the group and have some other way around the situation.

One is a shield the other is a set of lockpicks essentially, you want the shield for survivability you can find another way through the door without the lockpicks if you need to.

I pick counterspell and force the cleric to pick dispel magic.

With that said, the more I have used counterspell, the less excited I am about it. The short range seems to be cause it to be useless in many cases, particularly if you are fighting a caster that is aware of it.

shield? I would rather use "a spy that sabotages enemy's weapons".

Counterspell is less available than Dispel Magic. If you can pick Counterspell you probably should, allowing other casters to prep Dispel Magic.
