Circle Casting Coming in Forgotten Realms Player's Guide

Circle-casting is returning to Dungeons & Dragons. The Forgotten Realms Player's Guide will contain rules on using circle-casting with Fifth Edition rules, which will allow a group of spellcasters to significantly amp the powers of certain spells or add specific effects. A full description of how the new mechanic would work was not given to EN World, but D&D lead rules designer Jeremy Crawford mentioned during a press event last week that spells could lose its duration of effect, becoming permanent until dispelled. Existing spells, such as fireball, can also be empowered using circle-casting.

Circle-casting was first described in the Forgotten Realm Campaign Setting in 2001. The third edition version of circle-casting took an hour to complete and allowed the circle's leader to add temporary levels to their caster level while casting a spell or making a spell level check or add metamagic options to casting a spell. The Red Wizards of Thay and Witches of Rasheman both had access to circle-casting.

Spellfire is also returning as a form of sorcery. The new subclass was revealed as part of an Unearthed Arcana playtest released earlier today. Players can use successful counterspells to regain sorcery points and can also empower allies and damage enemies using spellfire effects.

At least now towns will be able to protect themselves from flying creatures attacking them. But, if you have a bunch of 12th level casters you might be able to do that already.

I wonder if Sorcerer's will be able to apply their metamagic to spells cast via circle magic and the same about other features that alter the spell being cast.

And will the circle magic only be usable by specific spells in the book or can you say use it to make Magifscent Mansion or Conjure Celestial permanent & without concentration?

Elven High Magic is basically Circle Casting too.

I was thinking about Spells that could become permanent from the PHB with Circle Casting and the top ones were Magifscent Mansion & the Summon X list of Spells. And Magifscent Mansion made me think what if Circle Casting on some cases gets integrated with Bastion mechanics in some ways? like getting to add permanent Magifscent Mansions to your Bastion and shared Party Bastions?

I’m curious how, or if, people with no talent for magic can participate in circle magic.

Anything rules-wise I can use to model how the folk living in places like Blustich (village in Cormyr) can gather together to dance and sing in order to summon winds that help during harvesting is welcome at my table.

No clue if it'll work like this, but I really like the idea of certain festivals or holidays essentially being circle casting of spells by the whole town.

It also gives fun plot hooks, like, "try to stop the not-Grinch from stealing not-Christmas, or the whole town (and possibly even the not-Grinch themselves) is at risk from some bigger bad that the (literal) magic of not-Christmas was protecting against."

They're called sacrifices!

OK well yeah, that's very nice too.

At last, Red Wizards are going to kick even more butt!!

Yeah they are one of the great villians of D&D. Rich history, rich lore, rich story possibilities.

But I'm certain the Red Wizards will NOT be the only group using Circle Magic, I mean Elven High Magic is a form of Circle Magic. There will likely be other groups with their own versions.

One really outside guess is that Summon Avatar, the spell the Grey Orcs used to bring their Gods into battle against the Mulan Gods, maybe one of the Circle Spells.
