OK, just sticking to the water-related abilities is fine.

Speaking of which...

They are able to survive on only a pint of water a day.

That's another slight differentiation. I think we've given another creature or two a "needs less water to survive" ability.

If Freyar's prefers making the Water Dowsing an all-Hek ability instead of a specialist-only one I can live with it.

Hold on, I just noticed something wrong in my previous post that needs fixing: "I'd rather limit it to particular Jarbo Hek"

That's simple enough to turn into a SQ.

Paging Dr. freyar...

That's simple enough to turn into a SQ.

Indeed.

Here's one:

Natural Dryness (Ex): Asheratis drink water, but they are very dry creatures. To survive, they need to drink only one-quarter the amount of water per day that humanoids of their size normally require.

Or this:

+2 racial bonus on Constitution checks or Fortitude saves to resist harmful effects from heat and dehydration. Bhukas are toughened to the rigors of waste life.

Oh, and for our earlier ability...

Water Sense (Ex): Bhukas have the innate ability to detect a source of drinkable water within a distance of 100 feet. Doing this requires a Survival check; the DC depends on the depth below ground of the water source, according to the following table.

Water Depth Survival DC
0 feet (on the surface) 10
10 feet or less 12
11-20 feet 15
21-40 feet 20
41-70 feet 25
71-100 feet 30

So, something like?:

Tolerate Thirst (Ex): Hek are toughened to the rigors of waste life. They need to drink only one-quarter the amount of water per day that humanoids of their size normally require and have a +4 racial bonus on Constitution checks or Fortitude saves to resist harmful effects from dehydration.

Water Sense (Su): Hek have an innate ability to sense water, allowing them to locate sources of water and spells with the Water descriptor. Doing this requires a DC 15 Survival check. They can detect water sources up to a range of 1 mile and Water spells up to a range of 5 miles. This sense can penetrate barriers, but is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, 3 feet of wood, or 10 feet of dirt or sand.

These two SQs seem reasonable to me. I agree with Shade that we need to give the Water Sense to all of them, just since it seems good to differentiate them a bit (especially if we will convert other Small humans later).

I can live with that.

Hmm, how did that "Y hey" get in my previous post? I'd better fix that...

You know, we should do ability scores. I think I'm inclined to go with 10s and 11s for all of them, but you could argue me around.

They should probably have a Str penalty like most other Small creatures. Since they are 1-HD humanoids, they should just be warriors with the standard array.

The original version did normal damage with weapons, so I'm thinking we should give them standard Strength. I'm even toying with the idea of Powerful Build so they can wield Medium-sized weapons.

Yes, good point about the standard array.

As for Str, I like the compromise position. No Str penalty, but no Powerful Build, either.
