Cleric/Monk multiclassing, can it work well?

Getting lost in fantasy maps
I'm curious if a cleric/monk multiclassing can be made to work well. I'm not concerned with levels 16th level and above because play will never get there as characters retire at 16th-level.

Anyone have any opinions on the matter?

It can work about as well as any melee/caster or monk multiclass build will work. There is a PrC called the Sacred Fist (I believe in Complete Divine) that is built to give the mix a little more oomph.

In 3rd I ran a lv20 sacred fist, in a con game, and he was effective as a secondary character, but the 3.5 version is different, but i think its a pretty good, but it sacrifices the supernatural monk abilities for spellcasting, and gives up the use of weapons, but sacred fist levels stack with monk levels when it comes to unarmed damage.

Sacred Fist would be sweet, I considered playing one after I got Complete Divine as a Favored Soul/Monk. If you do multiclass though, Monk's Belt and Amulet of Mighty Fist. Which should be standard on a monk anyways.

Monk is one of those classes where you should take to level 20(or near enough).

Unless, of course, you're just dipping to get Wis to AC and evasion.

I can't see anything more than a 2-level dip as being terribly desirable unless you really want to become a sacred fist, but a Monk 2/Clr X is generally OK provided that you don't value your casting ability too highly (IMC, we have a Monk2/Clr/RSP, and the RSP levels make up for the healing lost by dipping in Monk 2. If you do this, clear the needed alignment change with your DM.)
