Christmas Battle Royale: Battle of the Scrooges

I feel Sir Patrick Stewart ought to be getting more respect, but I can't say I've seen his version. And I can't not vote for Michael Caine. Muppet Christmas Carol is the intersection of great adaptation with great(est?) Muppet movie.

It's not that the rest are bad, but Michael Caine is SO GOOD in how he plays the role completely straight - and perfectly - while letting the mayhem happen around him. He keeps what could have been a ludicrous farce (i.e. a typical Muppet movie) totally grounded in Dickens' story. Not just the best Scrooge, not just the best Muppet movie, not just the best Christmas Carol, but one of the best Christmas movies, period.

It's a performance that should have received every award, but for genre biases.

If I had to choose I be off the list, probably Cain or Sim. But it’s really Albert Finney.

But Scrooge McDuck? I don't get it. How the heck is McDuck in second place, when George C. Scott and Sir Patrick Stewart are also on the list?

Familiarity? Caine's performance is, in fact, the only one of those listed that I can clearly recall having seen. I think I may have seen Stewart's at some point, but more just clips rather than the whole thing, and I'm sure I caught the odd Duck Tales episode here and there but I was never a fan.

scrooge mcduck is a immortal adventurer with more experience then just about anybody.

It's hard to not vote for him.

Then again, one of them is a ghostbuster...

and another is either a mutant headmaster or a star fleet captain...
