D&D General Can we Wish for Max Hp ?

I generallly don't allow the wish itself to be a gameest mechanic (so no wishing for more hp) but I do allow the player to explain out of game the intent.

so if a player cast wish saying "I wish I was tougher" then out of game said "Can I just max all my d6's for hp" I would most likely come back with a no... but I WOULD let that wish reset them to average hp+1 per level (so for d6s that would be 5's) if they already had less hp.

best wish I ever saw was a character that was a chosen in FR... he took wish as his 1/day 9th level spell and had alot of fun with it... "I wish we had a dry place to stay" "I wish you wouild shut up for a minute" but his best was when our barbarian said something dumb and I don't think it was even on purpose "Damn it I wish you were smarter" everyone stopped and stare jaw agap... I said "Well that's +1 int for him and your wish for the day"

Your second example provides another possible solution to the first. If someone wants to be tougher, don't mess with re-rolling their HP, just boost their Constitution.

I've never tried this as a player but my long-standing wish idea to give myself more hit points would be to point to the highest hit-point person in the party and simply wish to, without affecting the tough person in any way*, have at any time my physical resilience at its best match hers at its best.

* - this clause is in to, obviously, stop the wish from reducing her maximum hit points to match mine.

The flaw in this, for which I've yet to think of a workaround, is that if the tough person dies I'd get dragged down with her as her "best" - and thus mine - would be zero or worse.

I don't view wishing for max hp to be OP. I would allow it.

After all, it is possible (very unlikely, but possible) for someone to naturally roll their max hp each time they level up.

I had a player in 1E who had his magic user do this. Admittedly it really wasn't that big of a boost since you capped at 10 HD, gaining only 1 HP per level after that. He considered raising his Con score, but at that point it would have required 10 wishes to raise it. Turned out to be a pretty good Wish, since he took the brunt of a Red Dragon's breath weapon in the next session.
