Avatar game?

What would be the best system to use for an avatar based game? I statted out the Na'vi in 4th edition, but then i was thinking starwars saga would be probably more suited since they have guns, and old school weapons in there. Im not sure, im just bored and REALLY like the new movie thought it would be a cool place to adventure in.

Deadlands: The Lost Colony.

Change the description of Faraway, replace the Skinnies with pteradactyls, and go nuts.

Note that you'll need the Deadlands: Hell On Earth books to have stats for all the human equipment (power armor) and you'll have to invent stats for some of the vehicles (Deadlands was always very light on air vehicles). But I was thinking of that game throughout the entire movie.

Good luck.

Any edition of Traveller, Alternity, Star Frontiers, GURPS, Hero. There are a lot of systems out there that are meant for such a setting.

RIFTS? Plenty of mechs in that system, the Na'vi could be natural MDC creatures. Haven't gotten out to see it yet, but if their swords and such are at all effective against the mechs they would be treated as mega damage weapons as well.

Yes, I apologize for possibly recommending the Palladium system to anyway :)

I don't think that Traveller would do it justice (they never had anything that really works like the robot suits, for instance, and there is too much implied setting in Traveller tech which doesn't match Avatar tech etc).

My go-to system for building anything novel is RuneQuest 2, but that would probably be more work than you are after.

StarWars SAGA might be OK in some respects, but you have to excise all the 'force' stuff.

True20 might be a relatively simple transition to Pandora. Hero/Gurps should be able to do something pretty reasonable for it.

You know, Avatar reminded me a lot of Blue Planet (the RPG), but don't know how easily the system would do Avatar.

Alternity, Serenity, or Modern D20 would be what I would likely use. Palladium system could possibly do it, but I'm not fond of their system. World of Darkness could give the Na'vi the proper "epicness", possibly using a Werewolf reskinning (Na'vi would be near-human werewolves in term of stats?).

I also saw the parallels to Blue Planet. I just saw the film last night. WOW. The action element in the film would be best served by the rules light systems like Savage Worlds, etc. IMHO.

Well, so therein lies a question:

How to stat the Na'vi for D20.
Well, for starters, they're Large (9 feet tall-it's a no-brainer, this one). The 'symbiotic bond' I would represent as a bonus to Handle Animal (a big bonus, sure, but there's some limitations already there-like having to actually get close to the creature...). Bonuses to 'wilderness' skills like Survival (sine, you know, it's a jungle death world and all).

Dunno if it would be a good idea to add a quality like 'Primitive' (in a nutshell: it would make Na'vi characters to have a penalty to use 'modern' tech (like computers) and would not start with Feats like Personal Firearms Proficiency)-because I had the idea to use them in my own setting and there's just something about the idea of a Na'vi going offworld ang getting his hands on an M-60 or something and handling it like an assault rifle (like Jake does) that just sounds so damn cool...

Sorry, got lost there for a moment.

And sure, we're talking a pretty hefty Level Increase (+3 or so).

And there's also something to discuss-if a Na'vi can breathe a regular Earth-like atmosphere (and so, would a Na'vi player character require a breather to get out of Pandora). I was planning to go with 'no', but I'm still unsure.

So.... any help, please?

Well... they made it slightly easier to stat everything up here:

direhorse [Pandorapedia]

Looks like a monster manual entry without the stats... :)

Oh -- And I'd go Savage Worlds. This is "Princess of Mars" territory. Very pulp...very fast -- light on detail high on action.
