Are YOUR friends cheating behind your back?

We did have a player who used the trick of rolling the dice off the table and then claiming that he'd rolled 18-20 almost every time. Although it only ever got done on rolls he thought his character 'should' be able to make.

In the end we got a policy of putting a plastic box on the table and everyone had to roll in that. I just pray that he never see's this:

I will, however, admit that in my youth, I experimented with a few shaved dice, six-siders, for character generation. You can really only do it on the opaque pipped dice, as the shaved portions will still look like a regular dice surface.

But I was too embarassed to ever use them

Because I really think he'd go for it and I don't think the embarassment would kick in... In fact I think we'll just have to ban opaque dice altogether!

Cheating and government surveys

Well all i can say is yes and no. I know it sounds ambigous, but I play in Oklahoma City and have I cheated..yes..do I cheat anymore ...no. As am DM I have fudged dice rolls, but that is at lower levels and as the players get more experienced characters I do not..ask them, hehe.

I will state for the record that I at one time played RPGA and if you asked me " do roleplayers cheat in the RPGA...unequivocally...yes. Not all but you know who you are. I cannot remember a time I cheated in RPGA, I am not saying i didnt, just cant remember. If I did it was becuase the DM was being unfair(example: i was color sprayed from 50' away from a caster on top of a tower..really happened) or (and I have seen this happen) the Dm rolls the dice and states he hit you..never even looked down at the rolls.

Ok back to government studies..they are all biased to whatever the government agency wants the report to say. Everyone knows this and it is foolish to think that any study about Dungeons and Dragons (or any RPG) will not be biased towards what the Bible-thumping majority thinks.

I tell my players "if you have to cheat then you don't understand what the game is all about" so go ahead but i will ask you to leave if you are caught. I mean "really" cheating. If you come to a game with loaded dice, adjusted character sheets different than last session (I mean things that were not given out, ability scores changed to max, etc.) or things of that nature ..begone with you!

I am sure some will say"well you stated you have cheated and when you DM you fudge dice rolls"..then go ahead. I stand behind that everyone cheats at one time and if it is a obsession then you have a problem. Any good DM worth his salt allows for some leeway at lower levels and even at higher if only to make the game enjoyable and to keep the adventure alive. You want to kill your players all the time and start over that is your choice, but I will fudge a roll here and there. BTW ask any of my players if I have fudged any rolls since they passed the 8th level range..I havent.

The name of the game is to have fun and if you cheat on a regular basis then you spoil the fun for everyone.

In a survey by the nonprofit organization Fair Dice, nearly 60 percent of gamers -- mostly those who play the controversial AD&D game -- admitted that they cheat often or during every game.

Who still plays AD&D?

Really. 60% of 4 people isn't that impressive a number! :p

On that note. In one of my campaigns, My character has the lowest average stats of the group of 4. The rest have multiple 17s and 18s and ...whilst I have a low of 11, and average of 15...sniff. :p

I used an overly generous character generation method (seemed like a good idea at the time) when I started my campaign, but despite the number of 17's and 18's in the party, the Rogue had a Stamina of 8 and the poor druid was all average or lower except a big phat 17 wisdom...

I will vouch for this. He hasnt fudged a single roll (that we know of) since 8th level or so. Hopefully hes gonna start again, as he told us this next campaign is gonna be REALLY tough.

Ben-wa d4s, for extra stimulation. Ouch!

I guess the question should be is your SO cheating behind your back with your best dice?

For GMs with untrustworthy players - make sure they don't read the following!!

*looks to the right, looks to the left, then leans forward to whisper*

What you need are regular, old-fashioned pipped six-siders - the kind that come with any board game. Get some fine sand paper and hide yourself away from the prying eyes of other gamers. These dice have to be a solid, opaque color, else it will not work. Preferably white. Colored dice, or transparant dice, will be readily apparent on casual observation. White dice, however, pretty much look the same - though you will feel the different when you touch the two surfaces, the old polished one and the new sanded one.

Find the corner where the 4, 5, and 6 meet and sand it down. How much? Depends. I shaved mine and after rolling it a 100 times, noticed I got a result of 4, 5 or 6 about 75% of the time, instead of the regular 50%. Certainly an advantage in chargen. ;) But if you look at the dice, it will be obvious. That corner will appear more rounded (though a generally rounded dice will make this easier to hide), and the area that was sanded down will feel different, rougher and less polished.

...

I've said too much. :D

You know, thinking about dice so much gave me a very wierd idea: porno-dice.

Basically you have a transparent, relatively large die. You make the numbers small and possibly semi-transparent so that you get the best view of the inside of the die. Inside it is miniature model of some nekkid person in one of a variety of naughty positions. There would be several such positions, and different models, and maybe even a pair of people if the die was large enough, so that you would have people collecting them.
