Dr. Lawrence was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. He tried to hide it but Dr. Greene suspected something wrong. He was then forced to retire.

Thanks Ranger Reg. I' guess I'm gonna have to buy Season 6 to see those episodes. No matter. I like Alan Alda anyway. and I can tolerate the show.
