Acheron substitue

I plan on running the "Iron Satyr" from Dungeon 108 or 109 (cant remember exactly) in my Realms campaign, but one problem of course pops into mind. There is no Acheron in Forgotten Realms, and a lot of the adventure is about maneouvering around the unique gravity and the cubes and all that. So what (if any) plane should I substitute it for? Or what should I do? I could just go with Acheron, as my players aren't that skilled in FR planar lore, but I want to hold true to the setting. Any advice appreciated.

yep. hey, don't be limited by what the official books say. if you want the FR to connect to Acheron or a plane just like it - MAKE IT SO! :)

I wasn't aware that FR had played with the planar cosmology. Any idea why they dropped Acheron?

They retroactively severed FR from the Great Wheel. As for the why, I'm still trying to figure that one out... SKR has a rant on his reasons for it in the works that I'm looking forward to (like I look forward to elective surgery). I still use the older cosmology, though it has been amusing to see the creep of Great Wheel features back into the 3e FR cosmology.

In fact of the 5 groups in my area I know of playing campaigns in the realms, not a one of them used the new cosmology, and 3 of them are new to FR in 3e. My admittedly local and likely sample biased to a degree market research finds that the 3e FR cosmology has gone over like a lead balloon. FR is still my favorite prime world to use and I buy the books, but I discount the new planar setup outright.

good for you shemmy - the whole idea sucks. :p and eryx, yes, they did a whole lot of damage to the FR cosmology.

You could use Clangor or Nishrek. Those would be most like the plane of Acheron as they used to be realms on the Great Wheel plane of Acheron layer of Avalas. Hammergrim might also be an option for you, as it used to be a realm on the Acheron layer of Thuldanin.

The "Plane of Giant Dice" concept was tossed out when they recrafted the FR planes into the Great Tree cosmology. It was always a little bit silly in its conception. Although I can certainly see the goofy charm and appeal of having dice shaped planes.

But if you really like and want to use the cubical aspect of that adventure in your campaign there is no reason you could not house rule it that Nishrek or Clangor or both are cube shaped.

By the way I use the Great Tree planes for my FR campaign. It makes so much more sense than trying to jury-rig the ill-fitting Great Wheel planes to fit the Realms. The new cosmology is tailor-made for the Realms and has more meaning and mythical resonance for Faerunian characters.
