Ability scores for Monk (28 point buy)

First Post
We are going to be starting a new game soon and I've decided to give the Monk a whirl. I would appreciate suggestions for abilities using a 28 point buy system. Any tips appreciated! :)

Besides begging for more points? ;)

str 14
dex 14
con 14
int 14
wis 12
cha 8

Usually strikes me as decent.. in a very strange sense.. straight 14's would be preferable.. although 36 point buy is a lot for most games.

Thanks for the reply. One question--any special reason to value INT over WIS? Not to discount skill points, but WIS bonus is added to AC. I had penciled in numbers very similar to yours, but I had reversed the scores for WIS and INT.

I'd also ask for a non-human. In a small point buy system a monk can really use the extra's of a +1 ECL race.
I suggest half ogre or catperson... (What's the name of that catperson race?)
Depending on if you want to be a strength or a dex monk.
Totally worth the +1 ECL. A little cheesy, but on the other hand so is asking a monk to have only a 28 point buy, IMO.

I tend to favor higher strength monks, I think they are more effective in the long run (if they can survive). Here are a few ideas

Human Monk: Dodge + Mobility at 1st level, Power Attack at 3rd level, and Sprint Attack at 6th level.

Str 16
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 14
Cha 8

Half-Orc Monk (use a staff, get Power Attack at 1st, Cleave at 3rd, and pick Improved Grapple as your bonus feat):

Str 18
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 8
Wis 14
Cha 6

Half-Orc monk who is smarter (but uglier) than than the human (put a stat bump into Int at some point and pick up Combat Expertise at either 6th or 9th level):

Str 16
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 12
Wis 14
Cha 6

Elf monk (defense over offense, Dodge at 1st level, Weapon Finesse at 3rd level and Combat Expertise at 6th level).

Str 10
Dex 18
Con 12
Int 12
Wis 14
Cha 8

Mainly because I like the permanent bonuses associated with the higher starting int.

Since I would assume all of your points for level will be going to wis, as will a good portion of money for a +5 tome, and a +6 item it still winds up being 28 in the end.. not as high as it could be definately, but then to each their own.

I think it is perfectly reasonable to switch up int and wisdom though, the extra point of ac, will save, and dc to stunning fist may help you more than the, eventual, extra 23 skill points.

Yeah, high Str is pretty good, but Wis is also very important (more so than Dex).

Of course, you could go Weapon Finesse, but that's one of those precious feats you do not really have plenty to pick from.

Either Improved Grapple or Improved Trip (or even both) are very good to have (and both benefit from a good Str).

For 28 PB I'd probably go 15 14 14 10 14 8, if you don't care for Cha, that is.
With a monk, a below average Cha can fit well, tho, the silent, reclusive type.

I've seen a pb 28 half-orc monk live quite some time... Dex 12, Wis was good and strength was nearly maxxed.

Of course, he had a polearm cleric dude as second fighter in the group.

Don't play a monk with 28 point-buy. It's the most multi-ability dependent class in the book, and at 28 points the only thing you'll be able to do better than anyone else in the party is run and jump.
