My general take is that it depends on how the system uses them. They're a tool, and I'm more interested in how that tool is used in the context of a game system than just it in the abstract.

That's fair, but tbh, that makes the map feel weirder to me, like Federation space should look more fragmented. Like, Bajor used to be on the periphery of the Federation, so I'd almost expect it to be a bit of an island away from the rest.
