No, all these look fine

Happy with Motion Camouflage

Updating the Giant Damselfly.

Updating the Giant Tropical Damselfly.

I strongly support giving them acrobatics and also support some Big Cats with Teeth (i.e. alternate takes)

Suits me, although I guess we'd better leave these until after we've finished some of our other conversion.

The AD&D big cats are way more lethal than a "realistic" animal, so I'm wondering whether we should do the revised versions as the equivalent of 3E's Dire Animals. So instead of a CR 1/4 Panther, we have a Dire Leopard that's CR 1, or maybe even CR 2 if we want it supernaturally vicious.

Okay, I am musing about tweaking the Giant Tropical Damselfly to STR 20 (+5), DEX 17 (+3) so it has the same DEX +6 saving throw as its smaller cousins with their DEX +6.

It just seems odd for a beast that must weigh as much as a rhinoceros to be better at aerial dodging and evading than one the size of a man.

The Armor Class can remain at 15. Presumably it has 2 points of natural armour instead of one.

Similarly, I'm tempted to downscale the Giant Damselfly to STR 11 (+0), CON 10 (+0), Hit Points 13 (3d8) and Armor Class 14 and make it Challenge 1/2 (100 XP) with (escape 10) for its grapple.

An average sized Damselfly is a lot less powerful than an average sized Dragonfly, although it's still an efficient aerial predator. I'm imagining the Giant Damselflies mainly hunt on the wing and specialize in Tiny flying prey items (e.g. Bats, birds (including hawks, owls and ravens), flying snakes, stirges and giant mosquitos). That means they don't post much of a danger to humanoids such as adventurers, while Giant Dragonflies will attack hefty prey of Small size or larger even if they're on the ground or too heavy to fly with.

The original 1E AD&D version of this monster describes Giant Dragonflies says they "giant dragonflies are dangerous predators known to hunt humans. Because of their fearless nature and voracious appetites, these huge insects hunt not only all other sorts of similar creatures but prey on any warm-blooded creature as well." The 2E AD&D version has "the giant variety is a dangerous predator that attacks any creature its size or smaller. … When attacking creatures of tiny or small size, a dragonfly scoops its victim into its leg basket and devours it in midair. Once caught in the basket, the creature automatically suffers bite damage each round until completely devoured. When attacking larger creatures, a dragonfly darts in to bite with its mandibles."

So I've interpreted that as capping the Multiattack and Legs attacks of the Giant Dragonfly to Small size, so it can't grab anything bigger.

For the Giant Damselfly, I've gone for a cap of Small on the Legs but Tiny on the Multiattack that represents the "basket scoop", so it can easily catch Tiny flying creatures but would be reluctant to attack Small flying prey, since it's have to grapple them with its legs on the first turn and bite them on its second turn, which gives them an opportunity to counterattack.

If we extend the above to the Tropical Giant Damselfly, that'd give them a cap of Large on the Legs and Medium on the Multiattack. As mentioned in a previous post, this isn't as dangerous since it has a 10 foot reach with its Legs, so if the prey only has a 5 foot reach with its attacks the insect can grab them with its first attack and it holds them too far away for the prey to counterattack until it draws them in close for a bite attack on its second turn.

Do you have any comments or objections to that?

Boy, that's far wordier than I originally planned!

I strongly support giving them acrobatics

EDIT: I'm against giving them proficiency in Acrobatics since that'd apply to ALL forms of acrobatics, including ground manoeuvres, and Odonatids aren't very agile on the ground. Indeed, they're rather slow as their legs are built for perching and catching prey.

If you really want a Skill proficiency, the only one I'd consider is Perception, but I think Keen Sight is enough.

I'm wondering whether to add a distance restriction to the Motion Camouflage modelled on the Pounce ability.

Motion Camouflage. If the giant odonatid moves at least 20 feet towards a creature and then hits it with an attack on the same turn, that target must succeed at a Wisdom (Perception) check against a Dexterity (Acrobatics) check by the odonatid. On a failure, the target cannot use Dodging Flight, Evasive Flight (or a similar defensive ability) to avoid attacks by the giant odonatid until the start of its next turn.
Hmm…

EDIT: Yes, I like that better than the current version.

Updating the Giant Dragonfly.
Updating the Giant Emperor Dragonfly.
Updating the Giant Tropical Damselfly.

Also pinked in (or rather magenta'd in) the possible changes to both the Giant Damselflies while I was at it:

Odonatid, Giant (Giant Damselfly)
Medium beast, unaligned
Armor Class 15 (natural armor) OR 14
Hit Points18 (4d8) OR 13 (3d8)
Speed 10 ft., fly 60 ft. (hover)

STR
DEX
CON
INT
WIS
CHA
12 (+1) OR 11 (+0)
18 (+4)
11 (+0) OR 10 (+0)
1 (–5)
12 (+1)
5 (–2)

Saving Throws DEX +6
Challenge 1 (200 XP) OR 1/2 (100 XP)Proficiency Bonus +2

Legs. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Small or smaller creature. Hit: The creature is grappled (escape DC 11 OR 10). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the giant odonatid can't make legs attacks against another target.

Odonatid, Giant (Giant Tropical Damselfly)
Huge beast, unaligned
Armor Class 15 (natural armor)
Hit Points 68 (8d12 + 16)
Speed 10 ft., fly 60 ft. (hover)

STR
DEX
CON
INT
WIS
CHA
21 (+5) OR 20 (+5)
18 (+4) OR 17 (+3)
14 (+2)
1 (–5)
12 (+1)
5 (–2)

Saving Throws DEX +7 OR +6

Multiattack. The giant odonatid makes two attacks against a Large OR Medium or smaller creature. The first attack is a legs attack. If this succeeds in grappling the target, the odonatid makes a bite attack, otherwise it makes a second legs attack.

Here's another idea.

The earlier edition Giant Dragonflies were faster fliers than the Giant Horsefly (36" vs 27").

Rather than increasing their Speed, how about giving them a Bonus Action like so:

Burst of Speed. The giant odonatid flies up to 60 feet. It cannot use Burst of Speed if it used Dodging Flight after the start of its previous turn.
That means that a Giant Dragonfly using Burst of Speed can travel up to 120 feet (60+60) while a Giant Horsefly using Dodging Flight can travel up to 90 feet (90+30), which is the same ratio (3:4) as the flight speeds of the original AD&D versions.

sounds good to me

Fine…

While I'm at it I'll magenta in the Burst of Speed proposal.

Incidentally, my first draft of Burst of Speed started "The giant odonatid moves up to 60 feet" before realizing that meant the insect could run six times faster than its land speed, which wasn't quite what I was aiming for!

Hmm, that name's a bit generic. Will rename the bonus action to Dashing Flight, to (a) be more consistent in naming these abilities and (b) be a reference to the Dash action.

So, I think the mechanical elements are all finished, pending an OK on the speed burst ability.

Just the Description left.

I've renamed the Giant Emperor Dragonfly to Imperial Giant Dragonfly, partially because "Emperor Dragonfly" is a common name for Aeshnidae dragonflies and Aeshnidae imperator in particular and I wanted to make it a bit clearer that it's a generic Giant Dragonfly of Large size, but mostly because I though it sounded cooler.

If it's good enough for an Imperial Star Destroyer, it's good enough for an Odonatid.

Just noticed that Motion Camouflage. should have a "must make a Wisdom (Perception) check" rather than "must succeed at a Wisdom (Perception) check" as the next sentence starts "On a failure."

That makes it:

Motion Camouflage. If the giant odonatid moves at least 20 feet towards a creature and then hits it with an attack on the same turn, that target must succeed at a Wisdom (Perception) check against a Dexterity (Acrobatics) check by the odonatid. On a failure, the target cannot use Dodging Flight, Evasive Flight (or a similar defensive ability) to avoid attacks by the giant odonatid until the start of its next turn.
The error was a holdover from my earlier draft when I tried squeezing everything into one sentence, but it got too clunky so I split it into multiple sentences and messed up that phrase.

Never mind, it's a simple fix…

Updating the Giant Damselfly.
Updating the Giant Dragonfly.
Updating the Imperial Giant Dragonfly.
Updating the Tropical Giant Damselfly.

I also keep on vacillating as to whether the parentheses around "or a similar defensive ability" where worthwhile or pointless, but I think it scans a lot better than using commas:

Motion Camouflage [With Fewer Parentheses]. If the giant odonatid moves at least 20 feet towards a creature and then hits it with an attack on the same turn, that target must succeed at a Wisdom (Perception) check against a Dexterity (Acrobatics) check by the odonatid. On a failure, the target cannot use Dodging Flight, Evasive Flight, or a similar defensive ability to avoid attacks by the giant odonatid until the start of its next turn.
