Yep, I had the same experience.

I normally drink my coffee black, no sugar. So going from that, to "basically a hot milkshake with coffee in it," was a shock to my system in a couple of ways. Now I know better: on the rare occasion that I order a PSL, I remember to order it "nonfat, half-sweet, double shot" to suit my personal tastes.

They're pretty tasty once you get the recipe dialed in.

I've never been a coffee drinker at all, myself. Not really a fan of hot drinks at all. I'll go to town on an iced chai, though.

I am assuredly a tea person, not a coffee person. But I did have my tea this morning with a tablespoon of pumpkin spice simple syrup I made.

For what it's worth, the retail shelf PSL, made with Sbux iced coffee, I think, is significantly better than a "fresh" one. And you get to choose the temperature and tip yourself.
