SORA AI Technology Preview: We are Entering a Golden Age of Chaos

OpenAI posted a preview of its Sora AI tech with a string of videos made with AI generation (you can scroll down on their post to see more sample videos).

The technology is progressing more rapidly than a lot of people may have predicted.

With this kind of quality, it's not far from making all sorts of tech abuse problems in society that laws have not covered enough in probably most modern countries.

The transition phase we are entering with this kind of tech is terrifying, because there are currently so many people who are vulnerable to mistaking AI-generated videos as real.

Remember when blogs became a thing and everyone was convinced they would be the downfall of orderly society because they undermined real writing and journalism? I do. They weren't.

AI is going to be disruptive, certainly, and some people will weaponize it (the same way they weaponized blogs) but the constant focus on the potential negatives is exhausting. AI tools are also going to democratize a lot of areas that have so far been walled off.

They weren't.

The downfall of journalistic integrity, the 'well its my reality' angle that has only continued to increase? I mean Blogs may not have been the final straw, but they certainly did not help.

I remember being convinced by a Professor to not go into Journalism, over 20 years ago, and I cannot say avoiding it was the wrong move thats for sure.

Anyway, this AI stuff is just going to be a horror show, just as governments and orgs are now finding that hey, maybe social media is a disaster for our youth.

Absolutely. "Stealing our jobs" would never be a problem if your job was safe and a new tool just made your job easier to do. Unfortunately, in our society it hasn't ever mean that.
Since the first hand axe let one hominid do the work of two cleaning a downed gazelle, technology has been disrupting labor. That is what it is for and it has been an incalculable benefit to humankind. Our society has not just survived but improved through massively disruptive technological advances over and over again.

The only people mad about the adoption of color film were those paid to do it by hand. Well, there were also probably people who thought that color film somehow made film worse, but you can't account for traditionalists. At least capitalists you can understand.

AI, in its various forms including generative AI, is going to have a fundamentally positive net effect, even if some specific industries take a beating. Like with every tech advancement ever.

It's all fun and games until a loved one is featured in viral malicious AI pornography, or a lawmaker gets murdered by a conspiracy nut after a misinformation AI video triggers them hard, or a genocide gets "debunked" by fake AI videos, or a criminal muddies the waters of an investigation by producing AI videos of other people committing the same crimes in the same location.
