RPG Crowdfunding News – Savage Worlds, Geologist’s Primer, Wasted Lands, and more

RPG crowdfunding article shares a sampling of campaigns that end between July 27 to August 2.

This week’s RPG crowdfunding article shares a sampling of campaigns that end between July 27 to August 2. In this column, I like to call out tabletop RPG conventions and games stores (FLGS) crowdfunding campaigns. RonCon 2023 is a tabletop board game convention in Carson City, Nevada this October. Sidetracks Board Game Club is a game store coming to Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Since both are board games centric, I am not giving these a full write up, but I did want to mention them as tabletop breeds more tabletop, and I think that’s a great cycle.

Savage Worlds 20th Anniversary Celebration.png

Savage Worlds 20th Anniversary Celebration from Pinnacle Entertainment Group
  • END DATE: Thu, July 27 2023 8:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook and more
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $150 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the core book with five covers, cards, and tokens
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Twenty years is quite an accomplishment for any project! First published in 2003, Savage Worlds is one of the mostly widely played game engines in RPG. Used for Deadlands, Holler, and variant rules for RIFTS, Pathfinder, and a variety of fantasy, horror, and sci-fi RPGs, this is a workhorse of a system. After two decades, it’s time to offer a Player’s Book with variant covers and an accessory box full of cards, dice, bennies, tokens, and more, and options to pick up the core book. This is a great milestone for Savage Worlds and, if you like action-centric RPGs, this campaign and system are worth exploring.

Geologist's Primer by Double Proficiency.png

Geologist's Primer by Double Proficiency from Hunters Books
  • END DATE: Thu, July 27 2023 11:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): System neutral
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $20 for the PDF of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? From the creators of the Herbalist’s Primer comes a book all about real-world geology for use in your RPGs. Moving from Exalted Funeral to Hunters Books, this is the second entry in the Natural World Primer series by Double Proficiency. For this book, think of entries about rocks and minerals with a list of uses, where to get them, and how to incorporate their properties and elements into a magical campaign along with an overall summary. If 360 pages of “magically-inclined minerals” speaks to you, this will be a great resource.

Mediterranean Monsters & Mythology for DnD 5E.png

Mediterranean Monsters & Mythology for DnD 5E from Legendary Games
  • END DATE: Thu, July 27 2023 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $29 + S/H for the PDF and print version of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? 150 sword-and-sandal monsters from Legendary Games. Based on mythology from Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, these monsters fit nicely into a Classic Greek or Roman Empire inspired 5e game. With over 140 pages plus an adventure saga set in Greek mythology, this sourcebook will be an exciting add for any RPG table. Check out the campaign page for a free preview PDF.

Wasted Lands- The Dreaming Age Role Playing Game.png

Wasted Lands: The Dreaming Age Role Playing Game from Elf Lair Games

  • TRY BEFORE YOU BUY: Wasted Lands: The Dreaming Age Quick Start Rules is PWYW at DriveThruRPG
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Jason Vey brings a new fantasy and cosmic horror RPG to your gaming table. In the proto-world where mythology is being formed, your characters are living the adventures that become the legends remembered for eons. In two books (each each orbiting 200 pages), you’ll get the rules with customizable options and the setting including a gazetteer of the Dreaming Age. Critical Codex- Cinematic Successes & Failures To Intensify Your Game.png

Critical Codex: Cinematic Successes & Failures To Intensify Your Game by Jerry Joe Seltzer
  • END DATE: 7/30/2023, 12:00:00 AM
  • CROWDFUNDING ON: Gamefound
  • SYSTEM(S): System neutral
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $12 for the PDF of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Does rolling a NAT 1 or a NAT 20 sound cool, but in practice you’re sick of simply double damage or just dropping your sword again? If so, this book gives you a system to spice up the outcomes. Let’s be honest, the first 20 or 1 of the night is easy to adjudicate. But nights with 10 or so NATs of any type taxes a GM’s spontaneous originality. This book goes through different scenarios such as combat, spells, and proficiency checks. Roll a NAT 1 or 20, look up the scenario, roll on the d12 chart, and let the book prompt the outcome. If you need some quick reference for wild rolls during the game, this book is waiting for you.

  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Free League Publishing is giving their recently acquired property, Dragonbane, a push. That push includes a license for third party publishers to create adventures. Legends of Cyr-Nul is the first of a series of adventures for the system from Polyfountain Media. Featuring wolfkin and goblin villains, this adventure has you chasing a group of highway men. If you’re a fan of Dragonbane and looking for new content for the system, this may be of interest to you.

  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: €50 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? In this RPG, your characters are in Hell, a place that has broadband as well as bandits. Your goal is to use the technologies of Hell to amass wealth, fame, and power. After reading the opening of the campaign page, the social commentary and satire leaps off of the page. In this game, Hell is full of ambitious, tech-savvy demons and you need to outsmart them in order to be the King of Hell! If you want to try out an indie RPG where Hell is based on the worst parts of the first world, this RPG might speak to you.

If people have been thinking about getting in to Savage Worlds, the Kickstarter is pretty cool.

The main rule book includes all the updates, the player’s book has just the content from that book which a player needs - very helpful for character creation and getting everyone at the table up to speed. The accessories box has all the bits and pieces which help make the experience more ‘tactile‘ for the game (the clay poker chip bennies are just fantastic to fiddle with while playing). You could play a whole slew of campaigns in different genres with just this kit.

The new player’s box is intended to hold all the stuff a player might want to have at hand, and there is a new set of edge cards which contain the rules for specific edges so you can keep your characters abilities all together and not need to go to the rule book for them.

None of this stuff is mandatory to play beyond the rules, but it all adds to the feel of playing the game.

I KS'd "Herbalist's Primer" and it has regular life usage as well as RPG use. It does come with the boilerplate proviso that it may not be 100% accurate for RL use and you should use caution, but from my RL experience, it's well-researched and well-written with beautiful illustrations.
I expect "Geologist's Primer" to be up to that self-same standard as it's the same people, just using a different publisher for the book itself.
