My DM just implemented this method, and I really love the way it worked out -
Roll 4d6 drop the lowest 8 times. Choose 6 of the stats, the final point buy value of those stats must be between x and y total points. Stats under 8 are worth their value minus 8 (negative points value).
It seems simple, but it has pretty much everything I want in a stat generation system - it's not boring, like straight point buy, where everyone has even stats and one or two stupidly low dump stats. It has the randomness of rolling, without having one person with horribly worse stats than someone else. And, it forces you to make agonizing decisions, because if you keep a really high score, it may well force you to throw out another high score because both together would put you over the top of the threshold.
Try a few sets out at 32-36 point buy... I know that's higher than normal for most people around here, but since you aren't picking your stats, it's safer to go a little higher than in straight point buy. You have to actually try to assign the stats and fit them into 36 points, though... that's where the challenge comes. Do you keep the 17 and drop the 16 and 15 you rolled because you can't afford them with the 17? Or do you keep 16 and 15 and drop the 17 and your low score?
It's pretty cool.
