It's very funny that dropping your guard for a moment allows an attack to slip in and being paralyzed and having no guard at all does not.

That's what the coup de grace is for.

Screwy rules but they work. :)

What's screwy is having your opponent paralyzed right in bloody front of you but you don't take the coup de grace because you're too preoccupied mulling over the fact that you can't AoO him. Now that's screwy.

An AofO is a quick attack when an opportunity presents itself that doesn't upset the rest of your actions for the round.

As a Coup de Grace takes so long, you may not always have the opportunity, and getting to poke the guy because his guard's down while he drinks a potion but not being able to poke him while his guard's down because he's paralyzed is hinky.

If you are getting attacked from three directions and your friendly cleric blasts one of your opponents with a searing light causing him to drop his guard and drink a potion, you whack him. If he opts for hold person instead, you don't whack him.

I understand, and it works mechanically, but that doesn't mean its not weird. :)

And? What?

That's the point. When he's paralyzed, you kill him. If you're being attacked from 3 directions, and in the 4th direction is this paralyzed guy, then yeah, you probably aren't so worried about the paralyzed guy, but more worried about the other three still pummeling you.

So, you leave the 4th guy alone and go to work on the 1, 2, and 3. 1 falls, 2 and 3 keep beeting you senseless. 2 falls, and 3 keeps beeting you senseless. Then, just when you think the battle is turning in your favor, 4 comes out of it, and 3 and 4 whoop you. Now, you get to tell all your friends in heaven how you had a paralyzed baddie right in front of you, but you ignored him, and now here you are. :D

:p

And? What?

And when a guy suddenly drops his guard intentionally or otherwise, it'd be a good time for an AofO to apply.

Of course you could Coup de Grace him and get AofO'd by 1, 2, and 3. But then you'd still be upstairs complaining about how the cleric kept blasting people instead of healing ya.

I had a game where the PCs cast Hold Monster on a Half-Fiend Roc, but still got torn apart by spell like abilities. They got pretty mad when I pointed out the passage in the book that says no components.

Oh and for those who wonder, a half-fiend roc is terrribly, terribly wrong. Even held it nearly killed the whole party. CDG doesn't work as well as you'd think against it and when the demons start getting summoned it just gets ugly.
