As someone who's been reading the manga for years... "grim and gritty" is NOT how I would describe it. Not in the least.

The reviews I've read make it seem fun and playful -- Chef's Table meets D&D was one of them

Yeah, if people want a grim and gritty D&D inspired anime, they should look up Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, which has been in multiple media formats and had an anime in 2016. That's the one where low level adventuring parties try to scrape by and suffer through the trauma of losing friends. Or the ...questionably tasteful Goblin Slayer, which isn't the most grim but is definitely taking inspiration from the Tucker's Kobolds school of play.

Delicious in Dungeon is often funny, occasionally serious, and does some fun creative work with the mechanics and ecology of a mega-dungeon run by a mad wizard. It also wears its D&D influence very openly. It's probably the most clearly D&D inspired anime since Record of Lodoss War and The Slayers in the 90s.

If I remember right, the author did up all of the followers from BG1 up in the comic's artstyle at one point. The various extras they've done on the book showing how all the different species all look different to each other were also pretty neat
