Perfectly valid question. I hadn't really thought of it but normally the 0 level class doesn't get any hps. So, that's a slight alteration from the norm.
Seems like a good idea to me. I'd also considered doing the same thing. Its perfectly reasonable and they don't really get much of a gain, and once you hit 2nd level its all back to normal.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm just trying to come up ways to use ecl+X races starting at first level and making it fair for everyone. Now, I just need a way to do that with ecl+2 and greater.
