So more thoughts...

--Doctor was looking at a scan of Ruby at the end there. What's going on there?
--4th wall breaking seems to be a theme. Anita Dobson's character (can't recall her name) did it at the end of the Xmas special, Maestro did it, and the dance number did it.
--Gods, children of the Toymaker, magic. More of those to come? Each defeated by a little game (catch, music-off)?
--The One Who Waits is RTD's new Bad Wolf.
--Who was playing the violins when Ruby played the piano on the roof?

Comparing to his original reboot with Eccleston:

3. The Unquiet Undead -- Charles Dickens, zombies, romp
4. Aliens of London -- farting aliens, Downing Street
5. World War 3 -- continuation of above
6. Dalek--first 'dark' episode
7. The Long Game--space station, Simon Pegg, news corp
8. Father's Day--Rose dad's death, character episode
9. The Empty Child--Moffat's first, WW2 Blitz. Are you my mummy? Captain Jack's first.
10. The Doctor Dances--continuation of above
11. Boom Town--Cardiff rift, Jack again, another farting alien
12. Bad Wolf--Game shows on a space station owned by Bad Wolf corp, Jack, Dalek

I thought the episodes were fine, didn't love and didn't hate. Really enjoying Ncuti Gatwa's performance as the doctor.

My biggest quibble was the dance number at the end of The Devil's Chord, thought it was a bit too much. Ending with the wink would have been better.

Am I wrong or do a lot of the NuWho companions have something "special" about them.

Not that many when you look at it. These are the main companions from 9 onwards, ignoring "secondary" companions like Mickey Smith:
Rose Tyler
Jack Harkness
Martha Jones
Donna Noble
Amy Pond
Clara Oswald
Nardole
Bill Potts
Yasmin Khan
Ryan Sinclair
Graham O'Brien
Dan Lewis
Ruby Sunday

Out of these, the only ones who had anything special about them when first joining was Amy, Clara, and Nardole (and maybe Ruby). Rose, Jack, Donna, and Bill had special things happen to them, but didn't start out special.

I thought the episodes were good fun. I kind of have a bit of whiplash because I would prefer Doctor Who seasons to start as more grounded and then get progressively more batty and tonally all over the place as the season progresses, but clearly they decided they wanted to come out all guns blazing. I hope they still have time to do something a little more like old school Doctor Who in the weeks ahead. The problem with these shorter seasons is it makes it harder to cover all the bases in what I would like in a season of Doctor Who which is mainly a variety of tones and story types.
