concentration check, cast a spell and move

Hi everybody,

Does the concentration check that a wizard makes to cast a spell on the defensive when at 5' of an oponent can prevent the AoO provoked if he would move in the same round?

Example:
x = square
w = wizard
f = fighter

First, the wizard cast a spell on the defensive (magic missile). No Aoo because he succeded his concentration check.
x x x x
x w f x
x x x x
second, he then move is 30' back (<- this way)

thanks for all your answers.

No. The wizard would need a tumble check for that.

The concentration check (Casting on the defensive) only stops the AoO's that could be taken because of spellcasting only (in this case).

To expand on that, moving away you attract an attack of opportunity, except in the specific case of taking the Withdraw action. If you Withdraw, you cannot perform any other action (except free actions) that turn.

First of all, don't get confused :)

If you Cast on the Defensive you DON'T provoke AoO at all. The concentration check is done only not to lose your spell: if you succeed in Concentration, you cast successfully and get no AoO; if you fail Concentration, you waste your spell but don't get AoO anyway.

Keep the two actions separate: Casting provokes AoO (unless on the Defensive) and that's your standard action; moving out of a threatened square provokes AoO, and that's your move action. If you Cast (NOT on defensive) and move away, you provoke 2 AoO (your opponent needs Combat Reflexes to be able to get both).

You can avoid the AoO for moving away if you move only 5ft (in which case you still have time for a move-equivalent action if that's different from actually moving farther).
