the Jester

I'm just saying, if you guys are ever in the greater Redding area of Northern California, I have a fairly extensive home bar and would be happy to mix you up an interesting beverage aimed at your tastes.

I know, I was just saying thats usually what I get if I'm going to spend a few extra bucks.
We have a couple of local breweries that produce nice, affordable, and fairly widely available (locally) beers, so one of those is usually my go to for anything above the cheap level.

Talking about sweet drinks, I used to drink Southern Comfort and Pepsi for many years, I don't think I could stomach them anymore, can't remember the last time I had one?
Southern Comfort is something I've never acquired a taste for. My own "I can't believe I used to drink this" was Mountain Dew and vodka.

If I recall correctly, studies have shown that the amount of thujone in absinthe was not enough to have psychotropic effects. Now, the toxic additives that unscrupulous distillers added to quickly meet the demand for absinthe could cause all sorts of nasty side effects.
Or added to enhance the color. I understand some folks added copper sulfate!

we drank it iirc 3 times in the span of a few months, maybe a year. The first two times there was definitely more of an effect than just a beer buzz, so who knows how of what was in it. The third time it was garbage, I dont even think it got me drunk but that bottle my friend bought from somewhere else.
I drank real European absinthe all evening for my 30th birthday and just got really drunk. No sign of psychotropic effects that I can recall. IMO the reputation seems to be a combination of it just being really high proof, and a legend. (plus possibly other sketchy additives used a hundred years ago, like Ralif mentioned, fueling the legend).

That would be a fun thing to get for a Jaws viewing.
I know sometimes they do releases using the throwback can design precisely because of the Jaws appearance. Try to get that if you do it. :)

Heineken aint craft...
No, and I've always found it unpleasantly skunky. I was shocked to try it on draft in the Netherlands and find it was actually good there!

When I was 15 or 16 me and my ex-girlfriend used to drink Captain Morgan and Mountain Dew. as gross as it sounds it was actually quite good. But like most things my tastes change and even today I switch up my beer/liquor of choice every so often

You could be right might have been the power of suggestion, but I've done my share of psychedelics and the effects of the Absinthe we did (although were very subtle) they were there. Don't get me wrong they weren't strong by any means or caused any hallucinations but just enough to notice. But again, as you said who knows what was really in it. I recall reading an article about 10 years ago where DJ Ashba bought some nicotine vapes in Europe while on tour and they almost killed him. So that definitely leads credence to the fact that what we drank may have had some unscrupulous ingredients.

Molson Golden was the worst for being skunky. Back in the day if whatever you got whether it was a 6-pack or a case there always at least one skunky beer. It was a running joke, still is, grabbing a beer was like playing Russian Roulette.

I've never had a good Molson. I do like LaBatt Blue.

It's funny how bottom-tier beers tend to be so regional. I suppose there's not much call to ship swill across country, when college kids can get cheaper-than-soda local crappy beer instead.

My college town was 100% Milwaukee's Best* territory and none of these others, other than PBR, were even available.

* A name that stands as a grave insult to the long history of Milwaukee's brewing community.
