Tactics:

Kavar’s real strength is his ability to heal two hit points per round at will using the combination of a message spell, heightened two levels (but not requiring higher level slots due to the traits), and casting the spell on allies up to 110’ away. Note how he can keep deathwatch up constantly, so he knows how the health of those around him are generally doing. Alternatively, he can use the ability to damage undead for an equal amount (no save or attack roll needed). At first level, this is a dramatic shift in ‘resource management’. Of course, if no one in a combat needs healing, he can always use his crossbow.

He has other options, though. Kavar can also give allies temp hit points with his Share Essense ability…and then healing himself the subdual damage he took from using the ability. He also knows a number of spells that have long durations – a big issue with low level casters who have limited spells per day.

If things look bad in a combat, he can always use an Intimidate check (at a pretty good bonus for first level), followed by a cause fear spell – even if the foe saves vs the spell, he will run away (since a successful intimidate check starts the foe off at shaken). Note: You cannot use this tactic the other way around (cause fear followed by Intimidate) due to the Intimidate rules and stacking fear effects. However, once a target is shaken, there is nothing in the cause fear spell to keep the target from becoming panicked, dropping everything in their hands, and running away. At the very least, a successful Will save will cause the foe to be only frightened…and still run away.

Higher level build options:

You can do a lot with a wizard, but my preferred option on this build is to focus on buffing spells. Cast during combat, the necromancy school option gives the added benefit of healing your allies. Also, picking up a fear spell at higher levels allows the fear stacking tactic to keep working (since the spell has no HD limit, as cause fear).

Throw a level of Diabolist prestige class in there to make him a truly scary fellow.

The shifty-looking half-orc nervously stepped towards the cloaked figure in the corner alcove. “Would you be Kavar?”

Glowing eyes looked up from a shaded cowl. He momentarily assessed his visitor before responding. “I might be. What business have you with such an unpopular fellow?”

The man glanced back at the inn’s rear entrance. Two companions slumped on stools near the door, one of which appeared to be sleeping. “Well, uh…I heard you might be a healer of some sort. It’s sort of late for the temple district, and I was-” The half-orc stopped mid-sentence as the smell hit him. A foul mixture of blood and rotted corpses emanated from the stranger, and it did little to calm his fears. He’d already heard bad things about this man, and he was already worried if this was a mistake.

“…wondering if your friends could get some healing?” Kavar finished. “I would imagine that in your current state, you wouldn’t want to go to the temples anyway. They might ask certain…questions, yes?” He gestured to the two in back. “Some free advice, then. Your woman friend is hurt, but she’ll live. The other? He may not make it through the night.”

The half-orc, still rattled from the odor, continued, “How did you – well, look…yeah, we could use a bit of help ‘under the table’, if you know what I mean.” He shifted his stance uncomfortably. “We’re willing to pay…”

“Good, because the magics of Kavar are not free. How much do you have?”

The thug stepped up and set a pouch on the table. The sound of metal against metal shifted deep inside.

Kavar reached across for the pouch, and looked inside. He sniffed disgustedly. “Yet another reason you came to me – I doubt this would cover the costs of even a minor healing spell.”

“Please, sir,” the half-orc pleaded. “We got nowhere else to go. Money’s still good, and without your help, my brother might not make it.”

“Brother,” the wizard sneered. “Right.” He sighed, resigned to the table scraps being offered. “Very well.” He muttered a few arcane words, and touched the coil of copper wire wrapped around the middle finger of his left hand. He gestured towards the back. “There. He’ll live. If you want more than that, you’ll need more money. I suggest getting your companions off their feet for a few days. Otherwise, the maggots in this town will feast on your friends’ flesh.”

In back, the unmoving figure opened his eyes and looked around, as if waking from a deep sleep. The half-orc looked back from him to Kavar. “Uh…right. So…yeah, we’ll be seeing you then.” He made his way to the back of the back of the inn, gathered his bruised companions, and stepped through the open doorway.

Staring after the departing three, the wizard muttered quietly. “That doesn’t bode well, does it, Julius? Perhaps those three are thinking to jump me later – get back their well-earned gold?” He looked down at his feet.

From underneath the table, a small, black crow hopped up onto the chair beside him. “Master wants me to follow them?” the crow responded.

Kavar nodded and tossed a scrap of meat at the bird. “Yes, I want you to follow them. And just remember…if you leave the range of my message spell, I won’t be able to do much to help you.”

Julius snapped up the piece of pork before spreading it’s wings and flapping over to the nearby open window. He landed on the window ledge and looked back. “Master worries about me?”

The wizard grimaced. “No, you foolish carrion eater. I simply don’t want to bother summoning another servant. Now be off with you…”
