D&D General The Double-Edged Sword: Is The New D&D Edition a Cash Grab in Disguise?

No they are not. No one is forced to play with newcomers. If you do, it's because you have CHOSEN to. YOU made the choice to play with newcomers to the hobby and thus you have put pressure upon yourself to update to the newer game they seem to want to play. That's not WotC's problem. That's a problem of your own making.
The world must remain stagnant. Should the status quo be upended, WotC's dominions over the lands of men shall warp us all into degenerates, savages, bowing to the idol of our updated 5th Edition books. Have you seen the new wizard art? Imagine every wizard you ever know being like that. Imagine your mother, your sister, your children. That's the world WotC wants. Not a hat in sight, nor a beard.

Eventually everyone is strong-armed into buying a new core rulebook, monster manual, and setting guide just to continue to play with new player and adopters as the community as a whole shifts.
Why do I need a PlayStation 5? Why can't they just keep making games for the PlayStation 3 I already have. I can't find players online for it anymore. Why are they making me by a new console just to get new games?

Um, excuse me... snort (pushes glasses up nose)... we don't use the term "savages" anymore. That's an outdated term.

:D

Plenty of corporations have, shall we say, dubious ways of forcing people to buy new things. Everything from planned obsolescence by putting in parts guaranteed to fail over time to Apple and their changing power cords for no good reason and providing software "updates" that cause older phones to run more slowly and lose battery more quickly.

Releasing new books that people can choose to buy or not? That doesn't qualify. WotC doesn't exactly walk with the angels but releasing an update to core rules after a decade isn't a cash grab.

According to whom? WotC marketing? Take a look at the play test... IDK how "compatible" its really is going to be.
how compatible does it have to be in order for it to (not? *) be a cash grab?

* is it a cash grab if it is compatible, or if it is not, I am not sure… I feel like compatibility does not enter this but you seem to feel differently about that
