I mean, obviously, there's a number of things a DM could do to speed up the process of calculating whether or not a player hits. Most of the variables to boost one's to hit chance don't change that often. Ascending AC just kind of cuts out the middle man.

I've used both so often I can use them interchangeably now.

That said, if the system is using descending, there better be a "to-hit" table on the PC sheet to make things faster and easier for new players.

I haven't played, but started with BECMI and 2e which used the same system, while I'd probably stick to thac0 and descending AC, I don't really see any issue with ascending AC. It's simple enough to convert thac0 to attack bonus and descending AC to ascending on the fly that it should be fine.

I use ascending AC in my BX and AD&D games and have for years and it works fine. Converting descending AC and THAC0 can be done on the fly if I'm using an old product and when I write my own material, it's just baked in. I also play in an AD&D game run by a friend that uses descending AC and THAC0 and that's fine as well. Honestly, it's a complete non-issue to me. Can you subtract a number from 20? If so, you can adopt ascending AC without any problems at all :)
