I have a theory that Wizards just copied Disney and the Marvel movies. Lure people in with Iron Man and Captain America. Throw the people something like Quantomania and tell them it is the real world but not the REAL world. Introduce outer space people that are mostly like what you know and play, Now in 2024 they are trying for End Game and hoping they do not get Justice League.

Chapter 2 consistently presents the great wheel as the default cosmological setting assumption, and while the great wheel cosmology is not exclusive to forgotten realms, it is present there, so I think one could be forgiven for having attributed this to FR being default rather than Planescape being default. Explicit and specific references to non-FR settings are largely made in passing, including in this chapter.
In third edition the Forgotten Realms adopted the Tree model. I don't know why they change the great wheel though. They say that is the 'default model' of planes but Eberron, and Forgotten Realms both use different models. Though I like to say it that Berks don't know the chant and the Great wheel is the dark of it despite what the addle-coves think.

Mordenkainen, Vecna, Asserak, Tharizdun... they are definitely going Marvel. Bring in the old characters from ANYWHERE it doesn't matter just eat the Memories!

With all of the Villains FR had they could have just used FR villains. Szass Tam would have been the PERFECT Candidate for Tomb of Annihilation.

Honor Among Thieves (possible sequel coming), Baldur's Gate 3 (possible DLC expansion), Drizzt in Dragonhiers: Silent Gods, both 2023 and 2024 have a whole bunch of Forgotten Realms novels and comic books (the return of the D&D novel line is huge).

Perhaps the biggest sign of all is FINALLY a new map of Faerun with a pile of actually information on it, such as the fact that Akanul is still there yeah!

But it's also clear FR is no longer the default setting, so it seems like it's finally broken the Default setting curse (being default setting was bad for Greyhawk in 3e, it was bad for Nentir Vale in 4e as well never got a proper setting book).

I don't think that is an accident.

Also the runour years ago that a return visit to a setting book years ago from Ray Winninger.
don't forget BG3!! BG3 wonderfully illustrated several very powerful factions and gods, I'll never forget how awesome that temple of Shar and those cosmic Illithids. Yes, the FR is definitely having a new renaissance!!

It can have one of all of these, remember the multiverse, different Realms for different Folks.

I mean, the amount of effort and coordination this alone would require...

I liked the 3E era with Greyhawk as the default. I thought it was very subtle and could be ignored. They didn't even place many of the adventures in the world, they were just in a generic location.

As to Eve of Ruin, if I were organising that on my bookshelf, it would go in the Forgotten Realms section as it starts out in Neverwinter.
