D&D General [+] Tell me about Greyhawk

[+] Thread to stay on topic, not bicker about the setting, and generally stay positive. Sell me on the version of the setting you love. Don't complain about other versions or changes made, etc. I have some of the books from back-in-the-day, but I was never that big on Greyhawk. So, ENWorld...

I thought so, too. That’s why I shared it. Not my idea. But I’m stealing the hell out of it.

No More Massive Tomes of Rules

I am constantly surprised that more game companies don't make epubs.

No More Massive Tomes of Rules

Hell, yeah. Lighter games, tighter design, shorter page counts. That's 100% my wheelhouse. The lighter the better, honestly. Writing game mechanics like they're actually game mechanics is a great first step in drastically reducing word and page count of games. Remembering the books are reference...

D&D General "Player Skill" versus DM Ingenuity as a playstyle.

Ah, right. I do the bit where I make the player describe where they search and what they’re searching for. They find whatever they would find. I don’t do pixel hunting. That can die in a fire. If they’re close enough on either what or where, I’ll give it to them. For a real mystery scenario, the...

D&D General "Player Skill" versus DM Ingenuity as a playstyle.

I give them the clues for free, no roll required. It’s up to them to solve the mystery though. I will use a Call of Cthulhu 7E trick though. If they’re really, truly stumped someone makes an INT check. If they succeed, we move the story ahead to where they get another clue. If they fail, we move...

D&D General "Player Skill" versus DM Ingenuity as a playstyle.

Yeah, yeah. I view resolving problems with rolls the same as combat. To me, both are fail states. You didn’t sufficiently engage your creativity and/or interact with the fictional environment enough to avoid using the dice. Stack the fictional odds so much in your favor via player creativity...

D&D General "Player Skill" versus DM Ingenuity as a playstyle.

Sure. The distinction I'm making is in how the problem is solved. Does the player think through the solution? That's challenging the player. Does the PC make a roll using some stat or ability on their character sheet? That's challenging the PC.
