On the continent of Everend in the world of Gaia, magic suffuses everything, keeping all in harmony. The seven nations of Everend maintain peace after centuries of struggle — a peace now rapidly deteriorating. In an explosive demonstration of power, one nation called daemons forth from rends in reality in the Void.
Now all nations fear for their safety, and rush to gain daemonic magic for themselves. As each nation prepares for battle, common folk go about their daily lives fearing the brutality of war and the daemons’ incomprehensible power. All the while, the Void spilling through the gates collides with Gaia’s magic, creating Void-tainted landscapes. The taint transforms wildlife into ravenous beasts that rove across Everend. The balance has been upended.
Everend needs heroes to stop the march of destruction and help people understand their new place in the world.

At the Gates is the newest fantasy game from Onyx Path Publishing. It serves as the second core rulebook in the Earthbane Cycle, a loosely connected universe which contains various fantasy genres at different points in its history. The first such core rulebook was The World Below, which earned over $60,000 on Backerkit in October of 2023.
At the Gates features:
- Details on the setting of Everend and the political struggles of the seven nations that inhabit it. Each nation presents a ton of information for playing a whole campaign just within its borders, and enough conflict with its neighbors to make continent spanning gameplay feel epic and fun.
- Five professions that define your character’s role within your play group. Diviner for support, Harrier for scouting and damage, Mage for ranged damage, Warlord for support and protection, and Warrior for damage and protection.
- The Storypath Ultra rules. This updated version of Onyx Path’s Storypath system uses d10s, success with complications, fail forward mechanics, and the ability to turn a normal success into an extraordinary one.
- Information on exciting monsters found throughout the continent, and rules on how to create your own.
- Information on the daemons who inhabit the Void and whose presence in the world causes ruin. Along with rules for negotiating with and summoning your own daemons.
