Ye Fast Pack

First Post
I was taking a look at Horror on the Hill the other day when I noticed somthing. It was a series of "Backpacks" filled with different equipment and a pricetag. It was under the heading "Ye Fast Pack." Now it occured to me that one of the biggest slow downs of getting characters made in D&D is the shopping for equipment. So I was thinking that it might be a handy resource if we all came up with some "fastpacks" here. Like differnt packs geared for different characters or climates or sorts of adventure. Maybe one for light and fast travel, dungeoneering, thieving, etc. This way, new characters could outfit fast and easy and save creation time. Even if a player wanted somthing that was not in the pack it would still make it easier.

So add them here- What is your fastpack?

Aaron.

in the 3.11ed and t..rd ed PHB they have these at the back of each class. starting package for x race with y class. you can use these instead of calculating gps and buying the stuff yourself

There was something like the "fast pack" in a 2e product. Basically they just bought all the standard stuff and rounded down to the nearest gold piece.

Were I to do it, I'd include
Backpack 2gp
Bedroll 1sp
7 days rations 3gp 5sp (assume "good" because they have to be preserved and stuff)
rope, hemp 1gp
oil flask 1sp
lantern, hooded 7gp
crowbar 2gp
clothes, travelers 1gp

... bringing us to 16gp and some silver. I'm going to ignore the silver because I've seen far too many games where people started out life with terrific armor and weapons, but no clothes. I am pro-clothes, especially around half-orcs.

The essential everything:

Backpack 2lb 2gp
Belt Pouch 1/2lb 2gp
Bedroll 5lb 1sp
Small hammer 2lb 5sp
50' silk rope 5lb 10gp
10 pitons 5lb 1gp
15' coil of wire 1lb 5gp
100' spool of twine 1/2lb 2gp
small sewing kit 1/4lb 4gp
3 pieces of chalk wrapped tightly in a oiled leather cloth (watertight) 1/4lb 2gp
3 fishing hooks - 3sp
small hatchet - 1lb 1gp
small polished metal mirror 1/2lb 10gp
Flint/Steel and small box of kindling 1/2lb 1gp
Spork and paring knife set - 3gp
2 torches 2lb 2cp
Bull's Eye lantern with 2 flasks of oil 5lb 12gp 2sp
10 days trail rations 10lb 5gp
2 wine skins with water 8lb 2gp
1 flask with grain alcohol (as pure as possible) 4lb 5gp
crowbar 5lb 2gp
Caltrops 2lb 1gp
writing supplies 1lb 5gp

61 pounds - 76gp 1sp 2cp

Quite a bit of this can be left out though....

You forgot clothes! This is exactly what I'm talking about! Your guy remembered the grain alcohol, but his junk is left swinging in the breeze! Sure that's fine for one kind of "adventuring party", but when it comes time to fight the orcs, it's just gonna get weird! ;)

Drop the price to an even 75 gp and toss in a set of simple clothes. It's a even number so the players can remember it and they have pants. Otherwise, I think that's a terrific list.

Isn't it assumed that characters have a simple outfit already? It's been a while since I looked at that; we tend to sorta handwave equipment.

"Assume your character owns at least one outfit of normal clothes. Pick any one of the following clothing outfits for free: artisan's outfit, entertainer's outfit, explorer's outfit, monk's outfit, peasant's outfit, scholar's outfit, or traveler's outfit." (p. 111 PH 3.5)

OK, my bad.

I'm going to tell this to my group and watch them powergame as they take scholar's outfits and try to re-sell them in exchange for peasant outfits and a couple extra gp. You'd be amazed at those guys sometimes.
