Wyvern Mounts and the like

I did a little digging and couldn't find consistent information on mounts. Regular mounts were easy enough but what are the rules on a flying mount such as a wyvern? is just the -5 for a ill suited mount? If somebody could give me a much clearer outline of how flying mounts would work that would be awesomeness incarnate.

:] Only your DM can really clarify the subject. What I can tell you is

It will the DM's call on the defintion of "Ill suited for a mount"

Flying mounts can’t fly in medium or heavy barding.

A creature with a fly speed can move through the air at the indicated speed if carrying no more than a light load.

Because it is large, though not a quadraped, a light load for a wyvern's STR 19 is 232 lb or less. I could imagine it would not be that difficult to convince the DM a wyvern deserves the carry capacity of a horse [348 lb. light load].

My DM had me take ranks in Ride (Airborne) to not get a penalty, but I did get a +2 synergy with my normal Ride ranks.

The hard part is convincing the Wyvern not to eat the stable-boys. :)

And they get REALLY grumpy when they can't have their ketchup(point to anyone who recognizes that)

But they actually are technically quadrupedal since they walk on the thumbs of their wings like a bat. The one time I saw a wyvern mount it was for a wizard since they don't weigh as much as a tank in field plate, and the player actually RPed both of them, wizard and mount. Rather funny actually the wyvern was a cynical, cold-hearted, opportunist and the wizard wasn't much better. They would bicker back and forth at the worst times, and it was hard to tell which one was more tempermental.

That is exactly they way they want you to think...

They have an Int of 6. Wyverns speak Draconic, but usually don’t bother with anything more elaborate than a loud hiss or a deep-throated growl much like that of a bull alligator.

IIRC in 3.0 wyverns were huge... at least we had one as a mount and it wasn't a problem with carrying load to have more than one rider.

Meddle not in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy, and taste good with ketchup.

Something like that?

They can talk with an Int of 6, so likely they won't be too good at expressing their thoughts.

Close But Not Quite

Slightly more recent than that, also not a ShadowRun reference. To help TWBD no2.

And yeah with 6 int they aren't exactly Einstein but I figure it's enough to get by even if they're a little stubborn, with a one track mind, and prone to anger issues.
