Wings of Flying

A small question came up. A friend of mine said that in order to use wings of flying you must concentrate or you stop flying. Now in the item description it says nothing about the need to concentrate. Unless it means concentrating as the Fly spell which is as much as walking.

From the SRD

Wings of Flying: A pair of these wings might appear to be nothing more than a plain cloak of old, black cloth, or they could be as elegant as a long cape of blue feathers. When the wearer speaks the command word, the cloak turns into a pair of gigantic wings (bat or bird, 20-foot span) and empower her to fly as with a fly spell.

So what do you guys think?

The fly spell doesn't require ongoing concentration. Wings of flying allow you to fly as if using the fly spell, and thus don't require concentration either.

Since the item states that you are empowered to fly like the fly spell then you don't fall. You would be hovering in the air.

The way I like to think of it is the wings beat all by themselves. Thus all you have to do is tell it mentally where to go. That is why you have to concentrate on it like walking.

It makes no sense that a 5500 GP item empowers you as the fly spell, since by DMG item creation rules it should be at least 27,000 GP.

However, the errata speaks for itself:

p. 228, Wings of flying CHANGE last sentence to end:
empower her to fly as a with a fly spell anywhere wide enough to accommodate her wingspan.
Also, CHANGE the Price to: 22,000. CHANGE the table as well as the text.

Did not know they changed the price

Makes sense that they dropped the price a little because the char has a wingspan. That means they don't fit as many places as a char with the fly spell does.

Ah well, that used to be an item that all my non Wizard chars bought because of the price. Might have to rethink that.
