Why do elves age so ungracefully?

The issue came up in character creation the other day when someone creating an elf character wanted to have an adult child. That is when I noticed elves seem to have a rather short adulthood. Since elves mature at age 110 and reach middle age at 175, a elf who concieves at 110 will be 220 when that child leaves home, so to speak. This puts them well into middle age. A quick comparison of the races showed that elves were the only race which this happened with, as all other would have at least a few years of full vitality left once the kid left home. A quick breakdown shows that they don't even have the longest adulthood, which is dwarves at 85 years as an adult. Half-Orcs have 16, Humans: 20 years, Halflings: 30, Half-Elves: 42, Gnomes: 60, Elves: 65, and Dwarves, as mentioned, have 85.

Of all the races, elves are the only ones who spend more time as children then they do as adults, almost twice as long! What the heck!?!

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I realize the elven lifespan had been steadily dropping through the editions (I blame an poorly balanced diet coupled with heavy smoking and possibly heroine use), but it seems that they should have shrunk childhood along with the other age groups.

That could explain why other races tend to view elves as having flighty or immature attitudes. A human has to grow up and take care of himself pretty soon after the age of reason, but an elf needn't do that until he's had many years to get used to being a kid.

My sentiments exactly.

The entire deal is: Elves are living so long and love the arts and the "subtle" ways of life so much that their "childhood" is longer.

Not only that, they still have the maturity level that one would expect. They're more flighty than other races, but unless they've been sheltered their entire lives, you won't find a 60 or 70 year old elf that likes to do the same things as a 10 or 11 year old human child.

Think of it more along the lines of "You're 110 years old, so we can respect your opinion now."

My elves operate much like they did in a homebrew rules game I had. They mature at half the rate as humans until young adult. So a young adult would be like 36 then didn't age much until the last 10 -20 years where they aged rapidly. It made them a little more mystical and ,for me, made running them easier.

I know this is beside the point, but the easy solution to the player's problem is to have the child be half-elven...
