Whirlwind Attack and movement

First Post
Hi,

I am trying to maximize the usefulness of the Whirlwind Attack feat. The idea is to leap into a pile of enemies and whirlwind-attack, before being overwhelmed and beaten to pulp, possibly even leaping out again before my action ends (a la Spring Attack).

Do you guys know of any way to move more than a 5-foot step before (or after) making a Whirlwind Attack? (no items, magic, etc.; just feats, prestige classes, etc.)

For instance, can a Monk use the extra movement he gets by burning Ki to move more than a 5-foot step?

Thanks
Willard.

Mobile Fighter - Pathfinder_OGC

Rapid Attack

At 11th level, a mobile fighter can combine a full-attack action with a single move. He must forgo the attack at his highest bonus but may take the remaining attacks at any point during his movement. This movement provokes attacks of opportunity as normal.

This ability replaces Armor Training 3.

Check with your DM, I'd interpret that with WWA to mean you do not get to attack a single enemy (the one closest to you, or one of them if multiple are the same distance) at the start of your WWA, but otherwise would be able to hit every enemy that you came within reach during your move once.

At level 20, the class simply lets you full attack and WWA as a standard action. But I think Rapid Attack is actually more useful, and reaching level 20 is unrealistic in most games.

Also note, if you show your DM the class, use the actual APG entry, not the online source I linked. d20pfsrd for some reason seems to have taken it upon themselves to nerf/eratta the Mobile Fighter, which in the APG only loses Weapon Training 1 for Leaping Attack, and thus still gets 2-4. I checked the APG FAQ and did a google search, but can find no mention by any developer of "fixing" this "problem." So using the online version is doing yourself a disservice. Not a huge one since no difference kicks in until level 9 anyway, but thought I should warn you.

Lets say that these somehow are not extra attacks granted by a feat, the attack at the highest bonus which is given up is what whirlwind would have used.

For some reason? That is the official errata.
Page 105—In the Mobile Fighter archetype, in the Leaping Attack class feature, in the last sentence, change “replaces weapon training 1” with “replaces weapon training 1, 2, 3, and 4.”

That would be a pretty mean way to interpret it... Except it says you give up your attack (singular), so I don't think there's much justification to say a Mobile Fighter with Whirlwind Attack forfeits ALL his attacks for the round with WWA when using Rapid Attack...

Didn't realize there was a separate eratta, saw the FAQs like that one for the APG incoporate eratta notes without any link to a separate eratta, my mistake.

I'd say the justification is that WWA is not supposed to combo with anything that grants extra attacks.

Finally, a fighter class that is fun to play :)

Rapid attack is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

You get it kind of late, though; I was hoping to make a Monk who can Spring Attack vast distances and Whirlwind Attack. This would only start working when the character nears level 20, and the campaign I am in is only at level 6.

Know of any way to obtain a similar effect sooner?

Rapid Attack just lets you move before, in between, and after your full attack action, it isn't giving you extra attacks anymore than drinking an enlarge person potion to extend your reach is "giving you extra attacks" in regards to WWA.

In 3.5, there's TONS you can do to achieve that, or at least part of that (move then full attack or full attack then move). Dervish PrC in 3E specifically is built around full attacking on the move, and can do it once per day (for 4 rounds by then, duration would increase with levels) as early as level 6. If you're not going in with full BAB, you'd need an extra level or 2 to qualify, though. In Pathfinder only...not so much. PF with the exception of Mobile Fighter hasn't seemed too keen on mobile melee combat, IMO.

I would be on board with this idea. What about being able, instead, to move while spinning, like as an additional feat. To maximize this, you should have a Freedom of Movement feat that has Whirlwind Attack and Spring Attack as a requisite.... Yeah....

DEMACIA!

You mean like this? Yeah, being able to do that is why I'm playing a Dervish right now. It's just FUN! (Skip to 3:10 or 8:55)
