Which god for my paladin?

FIRST of all… I understand that this is a thread about a paladin’s morality, but please don’t threadcrap in it. ;)

Anyway, so I’ve made a new character for my campaign, after my dwarven cleric got turned into a vampire and then destroyed by the other party cleric.

I decided that I wanted to play a paladin next (starting tomorrow!), so I resurfaced an old character concept I had of the noble Half-Orc hero. His story is that his mother was an adventurer, and her party got captured by orcs; some of the heroes were killed, but some were enslaved. Nine months later, my PC Kenteth was born. Eventually the heroes (or at least Kent’s mom) were liberated or escaped, taking Kent with them. His mom raised the boy with love and taught him goodness.

Growing up hearing the tale of how he came to be, he decided to become a paladin, to avenge wicked deeds and dedicate himself to the cause of justice. Not so much a vigilante, but to get the guys that slip outside of the law; capturing them when possible and slaying them when not.

So, with that backstory laid out, what god from the standard D&D set would seem to be most appropriate? I think Heironeous is a bit played out as the god of all paladins, so who would be the next best choice for this character concept? I don’t even mind going to a nonhuman god like Bahamut, Mordain, or Yondalla if those will get the job done. Pelor is popular among the party, but I don't know if that god is LG (but if Pelor takes LG characters, that could work just fine).

matter of fact, my dwarf was a cleric of st. cuthbert before he got undeaded. speaking of avenging misdeeds...

I agree with Whizzy, your Half Orc sounds like an ideal champion for St. Cuthbert. Heironous also might be an option, especially if you look over Dragon 354.

Pelor is NG. Sun god.

Heironeous is LG. Paladin god

St. Cuthbert is LN. Law emphasis, dislikes backsliding

Moradin is LG. Dwarven Patron Smithing

Yondalla is LG. Halfling Patroness Agriculture

I think Garl Glittergold is LG, Gnome Patron and pranks

Wee Jass the suel death magic goddess is I believe LN

I think that covers the PH pantheon

If it is the greyhawk pantheon add in things like

Pholtus of the Blinding Light, one true path style

Rao reason and logic

Zuoken, LN martial arts

Others I can't think of at the moment. :)

St. Cuthbert for the win! I mean, Retribution? Totally the way to go.

Pelor works as well. We have a paladin of Pelor in our group - and he's always a lot of fun (he's also become a blackguard, which is kind of funny - a paladin of Pelor "slipping" is always fun!).

Since PHB Paladins don't need to select a deity at all, you could take that route. Alternatively, since PHB Paladins don't need to be within one step of their deity's alignment, you could choose a more off-the-wall deity, such as Kord (applying his strength to Good ends) or even Gruumsh (a nod to his heritage). Or, really, you could choose any deity, simply because it was the one his mother happened to favour.

However, based on the backstory, St Cuthbert does seem the way to go.

To be honest, I was hoping the OP was goign to be like "hey, what's an interesting god to base a paladin off?" so I could say:

WEE JAS!

I really wanna see a paladin of Wee Jas. To the point that I put Wee Jas in my homebrew as a goddess, and gave her an order of paladins. It's kind of my "hint hint" to the PCs.

Well,

I'd go with either Pelor or St. Cuthbert. For a twist on Pelor try Mayaheine. She's the Paladin who Pelor raised to godhood.

Jack.
