What was so bad about Treasure Planet?

Sixchan

First Post
Was I the only person who liked this film? So many critics said it was crap. I thought it was pretty darn cool.

I mean, it had everything! Catgirls, English accents, space surfing, plot, it was funny (not ROTFL funny, but it made me smile and laugh out loud at least once)...

So anyone else who went to see it: Did you think the critics were right?

Or worse: Am I the only person without kids who went to see this?

Naw, I don't have kids and I went. I enjoyed it.

It was fun- and reminded me of spelljammer. I really liked the moon city.

The spider guy was really cool- I will be using a race of him in my future campeign.

It is a great story in general. This was a fun version of it.

I loved it too. Those Disney movies just get better and better.

On the other hand on this sci-fi board I post on everyone really seemed to dislike it, without really being able to give me a reason why.

Yeah, the first scene of the movie had me screaming "OOOO!!! LOOK! SPELLJAMMER!" in my head.

Hmm...maybe there's something about this film that appeals to geeks a lot more than the general public? Like Spelljammer for D&D fans, and Catgirls for Anime lovers?

This was the first Disney film I've gone to see in the Cinema for ages, and I personally think it's one of the best (not the best though, not by a long way). My favourites are still Robin Hood and The Sword in the Stone, though.

I'm not sure where you got that impression. Rottentomatoes.com uses a compilation of critics reviews to rate movies. They seem to think that critics liked the movie, overall.

Well, at least in the UK, that was the impression I got. Almost every newspaper said it was pretty poor, and Johnathan Ross (he presents the main Film Review programme in the UK) said it was pretty average. Maybe reviews were better in the US, though.

Ehh, all critics should be treated as over-glorified consultants. And consultants are distasteful by definition (I pretend to be one on weekends- so I can say that).

They strike me as many English professors and book editors- people with the skill, but not the talent- leaving them bitter.

I really liked it; I think it's easily my second favorite Disney film of all time. I might even say first favorite. I'll certainly be buying it, later.

Yahoo's box office feature lists it at grossing $38,120,554 after 11 weeks release. Considering it cost something like $140 million to make.... That's a bomb. It's gone through both Xmas and Thanksgiving and not even made back a third of what it cost to make. It's not even ON this weeks' box office, which I assumes means it's not playing ANYwhere after only 11 weeks.

I liked it, and I'm a film critic -- I work for a small daily newspaper. I gave it a good review.

I really liked the soundtrack. I bought it and play it sometimes during our Traveller game sessions.
